Steve the Machine Celebrates Victory – At Vito’s Clubhouse!

The Brooklyn Paper’s Ben “I May Not be the Beloved Mike McLaughlin but Love Me Anyway” Muessig got the skinny on Steve “the Machine” Levin’s Democratic primary victory party last night… in the 34th NYC Council District!

Brooklyn Paper: Levin, the hand-picked candidate of the county Democratic Party leader Vito Lopez, spoke to our reporter Ben Muessig outside Lopez’s clubhouse, the Bushwick Council of the Knights of Columbus at Wyckoff Avenue and Grove Street — a location that is not even in the 33rd District that Levin hopes to represent.

The clubhouse is actually in the 34th District, which Lopez-backed candidate Maritza Davila appears to have narrowly lost to former Lopez-staffer Diana Reyna (D-Williamsburg).

Maybe when Levin pulls his thumb out of Lopez’s ass, it will point him in the right direction to his own district.

Maybe now the self-important people who thought the 33rd Council District was all about Bklyn Hts, when it’s really all about Williamsburg, will wake up and realize that the Masters of the Universe who turned Bklyn Bridge Park into a development project are no longer the all-powerful poo bahs they used to be. Marty Connor was the first to lose to a pro-REAL BBP challenger. Now it’s Joanne. It’s all about the PEOPLE, folks, like democracy, ya know. The Poo Bahs do NOT own Bklyn — after yesterday, they don’t even own BBP any more. Compliant politicians are gone. Lander and Levin will help Squadron make sure that there is no additional housing in the park, and that we get some active recreational uses.

Anybody else want to disagree? Or can we now get on to the business of returning BBP to the people.

Steve is a real person who will do us proud. The elite have now been defeated in 2 consecutive elections.. Marty Connor and Joanne Simon who were no more than servants to them. Yes we will get a Brooklyn Bridge Park that is without private housing and serves all our communities. And why is Steve’s clubhouse worse than Joannes’s.? Perhaps this is also the end of IND a totally morally corrupt place. think Buddy Scotto.

“Why is Steve’s clubhouse worse than Joanne’s?”

Because it’s NOT IN OUR DISTRICT. Duh. You write that “Steve is a real person who will do us proud” but having his victory party be a Lopez-sponsored event doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

now miss cranberry street do not be a sore loser..do not worry his office will be in the district

  6. nicky215 September 16, 2009 at 11:39 am #

also miss cranberry your lack of understanding of politics is showing.candidates go to their clubs and get the tallies. kind of like marty when he was a reformer before he became a regular did at wbid

  7. The Where September 16, 2009 at 11:42 am #

Miss nicky you’re confirming that Mr. Levin is engaging in politics as usual.

  8. nicky215 September 16, 2009 at 12:01 pm #

I ASSUME YOU WERE FOR JOANNE WHO BY TAKING LOTS AND LOTS OF MONEY FROM GUTTMAN, PERSALL, WITTY AND ALL DOES NOT ENGAGE IN PAY TO PLAY POLITICS. STOP THE UPPITY STUFF.
i HAVE LOTS TO DO TODAY SO HAVE A GOOD DAY. AND AGAIN TRY NOT TO BE A SORE LOSER

  9. Cranberry Beret September 16, 2009 at 12:05 pm #

No, I fully understand how political machines work. That’s why I was disappointed to see that Levin didn’t even have his own victory party, just an event organized for all of Lopez’s so-called mentees. Truly independent politicians can manage to organize their own fete in their own district.

  10. Real Reform Brooklyn September 16, 2009 at 12:25 pm #

Give the guy a break! Let him celebrate for one day before you all start sniping. So he celebrated outside the District. Are you surpised? Hello???

Also, for those of you announcing the death of the Brooklyn Heightistas, keep in mind that you cannot really draw a line from Squadron to Levin. They received support from different sides of the Satmar schism. There is no discernible trend.

Our analysis: Levin winning is good for Greenpoint/Williamsburg, great for UJO and TBD for the rest of the District. We will formulate a more considered view later.

No I was not for Joanne. I’m not sure why it’s “uppity” to think a local politician would celebrate in his/her own district. Nitpicky perhaps but not uppity. I didn’t suggest Levin should have made a beeline to a champagne soiree at the Casino. I would have been content to see him enjoy some pierogie in a Greenpoint diner.

  12. nicky215 September 16, 2009 at 3:02 pm #

    Hi Cranberry
I bet if it was a champagne event at the casino you would have been there

  13. Cranberry Beret September 16, 2009 at 3:32 pm #

Thanks for offering your assumption, but I’ve never been to the Casino and have no plans to go. I’m not sure why you need to resort to these kind of assumptions to paint me as “uppity” just because I questioned our presumed council member’s choice of celebration venue. What’s the chip on your shoulder? Just because I’m not a supporter of Steve Levin doesn’t mean I’m part of the cabal you think lurks in Brooklyn Heights.

    cranberry –
try and stop responding – you are def getting goaded here…. you are certainly entitled to your opinion and clearly this is a place to state it, but the round robin conversation about who you are, what you think and what you do in the neighborhood is clearly in bad taste.

  25. Brownstone Brooklynite from Birth September 17, 2009 at 4:06 pm #

Shame on all of us! While the self-righteous, comfortable liberals of the Heights and Slope were busy worrying about fair trade coffee and the like, they allowed the Williamsburg & Bushwick machines to deliver this election to a carpetbagging, twenty something, whose entire career has been overseen by a corrupt power broker from Bushwick. It wasn’t of course only the machine’s doing. It was the abundance of similarly sounding candidates who split the vote, that also helped make it possible for Vito Lopez to extend his grip on power. It’s too bad there wasn’t any progressive leaders who could request that some of these loosers drop out to give somebody a chance to win more than the roughly 34% of the vote that Levin won.

I’m not worried about the members of the Casino, I’m sure that Lopez… I mean Levin will do what ever is necessary to placate them.

Meanwhile, does anyone know if there is a republican in this race?

  26. Homer Fink September 17, 2009 at 4:45 pm #

There’s a conservative party candidate if I’m not mistaken.

  27. TH September 17, 2009 at 6:27 pm #

Hate to spoil all the gossip, but there hasn’t been any celebration for Levin yet-gathering to hear the results yes but no celebration. That is being worked on…

  28. nicky215 September 17, 2009 at 7:43 pm #

    dear brownstone
wait till you meet steve …you will really like him…he is sincere..and will do a great job for us… you might be suprised

  29. nicky215 September 17, 2009 at 7:44 pm #

and what exactly is the willamsburg machine…??

  30. dp September 18, 2009 at 11:06 am #

Steve is not a bad guy, I don’t really care that his office was out of the district.

But for anyone to say with real certainty that “steve will do this or that for the park” is out of their mind. There’s no way to tell. Everyone in Brooklyn Heights is just such a damn expert on the election. Everyone is a freakin expert. I would just wish all of you would shut up. Levin had a total turnout operation of 101 Clark St, the Gowanus Houses, and the Hasidic vote. He didn’t need you to vote for him. He didn’t need brownstone brooklyn since he already had the numbers. That’s what the machine is. Anything he could add on top of what niederman turned out in williamsburg and what he turned out in the projects was just icing on the cake, so if he promised you no housing in the park, then he added another 15 votes. That’s that. Just shut up and stop being an expert, because you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Steve had this election handed to him on a silver platter. And he smoked everyone.

  32. nabeguy September 18, 2009 at 9:19 pm #

And right next to that silver platter is the carving knife of his detractors. Brownstone Brooklyn got forked.

  33. brooklyn Guy September 19, 2009 at 11:31 am #

    Two points –
I1- t is sad that a group of Jewish people who will never vote for a non-Jewish woman, control who shall be our Council person. A shonda.
2 – A friend who was a big supporter of Steve’s said to me on election day, ‘He’s not really the babbling, seemingly uninformed, numbnuts you have heard at the debates, he really has good ideas. He just did what he to do to get elected.

I’d give him the benefit of a doubt.

  34. franklin September 19, 2009 at 4:08 pm #

    gee gary aka brooklyn guy
if is equally sad that a group of elites backed the loser..Oh I guess its sad for them….they thought money rules ..here votes rule
as for you your latent anti-semtism is showing

  35. franklin September 19, 2009 at 4:53 pm #

on second thought mr. vander p
your latent antisemitism is not very latent… its out there

  36. nabeguy September 20, 2009 at 8:18 pm #

Franklin, money rules, no matter whose hands it happens to be in. Doesn’t make a difference whether the bearers sport Brooks Brothers suits or earlocks, it’s guaranteed that the most ambitious politicians will figure out who wields the greatest ability to seat them. Given the limited development possibilities in Brownstone Brooklyn, the financial dynamic has shifted.
