If a Tree Falls at Fulton Landing…

It made a sound, and there were plenty of people around to hear it.  Fortunately, the huge limb that came crashing down on Old Fulton St. near Furman St. just before 9:00 p.m. only hurt a few cars.  The Fire Department responded to the scene and sawed the remnants of the tree into manageable chunks, which will later be handled by the Parks Department.  It was unclear why this Brooklyn tree decided to stop growing, but it may have been a late-bloomer in the casualty list of city arbor caused by Tuesday night’s storm.

Saw something in the neighborhood I haven’t seen before. First noticed it yesterday and it was still there this evening. On the southwest corner of Cadman Plaza West and Middagh, in the gutter… Two used needles!

Shouldn’t that be, “but there were plenty of people around to hear it.” I mean, I don’t think that it has ever been proven that a tree doesn’t make a sound if no one is around.

This looks like an Ailanthus altissima, the Tree of Heaven or, as my brother used to put it, “the stink tree.” Very weak wood, often not well rooted.

Jeez, some empiricist I turned out to be. That should say, “I don’t think that it has ever been proven that a tree DOES make a sound if no one is around.”
