The Brooklyn Eagle writes about Sidney Place couple, Hildy Simmons and David Sprafkin, who replaced a plant that was constantly being bumped into by mail carriers, deliverymen and others with a Buddha a few years ago. Now, on its “birthday” folks bring the statue gifts:
Brooklyn Eagle: So in 2003 Hildy Simmons and her husband replaced that plant with a seated Buddha statue. Buddha got zinged, too, by the delivery person, but in true Zen fashion, he shrugged it off and kept smiling.
Shortly after Buddha’s arrival in the Simmons-Sprafkin garden, a delightfully strange annual event commenced; every spring since his coming, small packages have mysteriously appeared outside the garden gate. The presents are accompanied by cards addressed to the Buddha wishing him a happy birthday.
