bornhere – much of the square footage in the city is above ground; as long as a disturbing noise comes from above street level, those affected will NOT be able to locate the cause. Nonetheless, ridding the city of excessive noise IS the charge of the police (with DEP and other agencies). You can look in the noise code: it says so! Whether I, the victim, can identify the source of this nuisance or not, it is the city’s responsibility to respond to and eliminate it. I can’t enter private buildings to figure out where it’s is coming from; but it is public bodies’ responsibility to do what they must – whether that’s inquiring with owners or whatever it is – to keep the city free of disturbances. Nothing in the code says that only disturbances WHOSE SOURCES ARE KNOWN are proscribed. They’re proscribed, period. Otherwise, you know what you’re saying? You’re saying that those who can enter buildings – owners – are entitled to the protection of the Code; but those not owning property are not. So, look: you’ve got an equal protection problem here. Don’t own the building potentially causing the nuisance? You’re stuck with it, then.

I don’t think the law was meant to work that way.

bornhere, also: I appreciate the link and know you’re trying help; but I never claimed you couldn’t email or talk to DEP; you can talk or email with them all you like; but the minute you ask to have personnel sent to enforce the code, you will be referred to 311. Whether you want to believe this or not, it is the fact. The level of denial of this fact on this board is hard to understand. You all are saying you can ask DEP for an inspector. The FACT is otherwise.

It’s probably a smoke alarm in one of the rooms in the EHS/St George dorm. You won’t be able to directly locate it because by the time it hits street level it’s probably bounced off each building three or four times.

  • ME

epc – You know, it’s 100 times as loud as any smoke or CO detector I have ever heard. I’m betting it’s a roof door alarm or something: an heavy-duty device producing industrial-strength noise.

  • The Where

ME – what medications are you currently taking? Some may cause a ringing the one’s ears.

  • ME

Who said anything about a ringing noise? This is a beep, coming from the St. George, or perhaps 70 Clark.

  • No One of Consequence

Why don’t you visit the suspect buildings, ask to speak to the super, explain the situation and ask them to check their roof doors? Or do you want the police to do that for you?

  • ME

The St. George is a dorm and conversations with desk attendants there are unlikely to produce a superintendant for me to talk to. Also, “roof door” is a wild guess (not a bet, as I suggested). I haven’t any idea what’s causing this. A superintendant will be disinclined to investigate unless urged by someone in authority. 70 Clark is a private residence without a concierge or desk attendant.

The “someone in authority” should be from the DEP. I called the cops because it was a weekend.

Maybe it’s one of those rodent deterrants. Humans usually don’t hear it but some people can.

  • It’s over here too

I’ve heard the beeping on Remsen, near the promenade, and also further up near Henry/Remsen.

  • ME

    ls – disproportionate, much?

  • The Where

ME – this story is all in your imagination until we see a video of this noise happening. Until then, please double your medication.

  • No One of Consequence

Well, you never know until you try.

On the way to the R train this morning, I was surprised (sort of) to see that 1-800-MATTRES (make up your own “last ‘s’ ” comment) seems to have taken their beds and run. Hurrah. I hope.

  • ME

The St. George’s super is checking…

    *ME wipes egg off face*

  • No One of Consequence

I, too, noticed that about 1-800-MATTRES. I guess add that to the tally of empty Montague storefronts, which (including 2nd floor retail like the video store above Armando’s) by my count is now 10, or is it 11.
Add to that the AT&T location on Court/Cadman, Bolton’s and other (3 or 4 other) locations on Remsen.
Then of course, Sea Asian, BusyChef/Blue Pig and the other Cranlyn space that used to be the deli/bodega.

@ME, hope that they find something and it gets settled.

  • hoppy

The fan on top of 84 Henry?

  • epc

1-800-MATTRESS filed for bankruptcy earlier this year and was sold to Sleepy’s (see http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsnews/idINN2651896220090527?rpc=33)

  • It’s over here too

One source of the beep-beep-beep: 127 Remsen ground floor….can’t tell if it’s from inside or just the big pile of garbage piled outside.

  • seriously

Why dont you go through the pile of garbage and see if you can find the beeping device and then report back to us?

  • Montague Mike

I was on the corner of Clark and Henry this morning – didn’t hear a thing (other than the garbage truck, street cleaner, schoolbus, beer truck, boar’s head truck, fire truck, unidentified large construction truck and taxi cab honking)
