Who Chopped Down a Tree on Clark St. in the Dark of Night? NYC Parks Dept Seeks Info

Mary Frost reports in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle that the NYC Parks Department is seeking information about a missing tree on Clark St. According to the report, sometime after midnight on October 13, an arborcidal maniac chopped down a young, healthy, honey locust tree in front of 64 Clark St. The Parks Department had planted the tree a year ago.

How does one chop down an entire tree without anyone seeing or hearing a thing? Read all the details in Mary’s report, and if you have any helpful info, email treewatch@parks.nyc.gov.

While we’re at it, here’s another unsolved mystery. This burnt out car was found on Hicks St., near Middagh, the morning of September 25. No one saw or heard a thing apparently, and no one was reported injured.

Just what goes on in the middle of the night in the north Heights?

    While this was a stupid act done by a stupid person, at least it was a quick-growing, almost invasive locust tree and not a linden or a beech

    I’m guessing a truck did so much damage to it that cutting down the remnant was the kind thing to do. Alternatively, look to who benefits from being able to have trucks pull up and unload on that stretch of sidewalk – Gristede’s perhaps?

    Yes, but the greater problem is that an act like this gives other people ideas.

    There’s a much larger tree that was recently chopped down (or knocked down?) one night on Aitken Place, alongside the church. The branches and trunk are still there, pilled up, but it wasn’t so neatly cut at the base. I wonder if there’s any connection to this?

    Decades ago on my block a speeding car, driving way too fast, came up on the sidewalk and decapitated two saplings before zooming away. I wonder if this is what happened on Clark Street?

    i think that one might have been taken out in a storm.

    That car looks like it was dumped there rather than burned , which would have definitely attracted attention, even in the middle of the night. There doesn’t seem to be any damage to the nearby tree or roadway.
