Love Thy Neighbor: This Weekend, Lincoln Restler & Jo Anne Simon Offer Opportunities to Donate Toys & Fight Hunger

In the spirit of the holiday season, both City Councilmember Lincoln Rester and State Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon are each holding toy drives on Saturday, December 17th. Assembly Woman Simon has also spearheaded a food voucher drive for the benefit of Gowanus Mutual Aid.

“Help spread joy to a child in need in our community this holiday season. Please bring your unwrapped, new, or unused gift (toy or book) to Brooklyn Borough Hall on Saturday, December 17 between the hours of 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Or, drop off your gift prior at Councilmember Lincoln Restler’s Office at 410 Atlantic Ave., Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. If you have a sizable donation from your donation and assistance with pick-up, contact district33@council.nyc.gov or (718) 875-5200.”

Come to make a donation, then stay to enjoy the festive Borough Hall Holiday Market, open from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership boasts the market has “more than 50 Brooklyn-based artisans, food and beverage operators, and vintage and antique collectors.”

The Office of Jo Anne Simon is sponsoring a Toy Drive for Camp Friendship and a Food Voucher Drive for Gowanus Mutual Aid:

“We are thrilled to partner with Camp Friendship in Park Slope to help deliver holiday cheer and toys to our community. We are accepting toy donations in our office at 341 Smith St from now until Friday, December 16. Drop them off between 9:30am-5pm, Monday-Friday (call or email simonj@nyassembly.gov if you need to arrange a drop-off after 5pm). Toys should be new and unwrapped for ages 0-18. Toys will also be distributed to the Warren Street Houses for kids 8-13 years old.

You can also drop off toys directly at Camp Friendship, 339 8th St, or buy directly off of Camp Friendship’s wish lists at Amazon and Target. Toys will be distributed to the community on Saturday, December 17.”

    I happened to be at the Boro Hall Farmers Market on Saturday and saw 3 or 4 things worth mentioning.

    Councilman Restler was THERE. This is not someone who had high visibility when campaigning and then “just” maintained a local office. He’s HANDS ON in the very best way.

    They seemed to have gotten a respectable amount of donations, testament to his team’s organizational skills.

    I’ve lived in the Heights … a long time, and while we’ve been lucky with some of our previous elected officials, Mr. Restler sure seems – I’m hardly the first to say it, but at this time of year it’s doubly appropriate – like everything we could ever hope for in a representative!

    Mayor Adams, as I recall, was able to put his thumb on the scale, and I believe the City Council is led by a woman far less energetic, principled or intelligent. That’s a shame, because if ever the City needed the Council the way Trump’s awfulness was mitigated a tiny bit by the Congress, it’s now.

    It’s also a problem that individual Council members – especially first-termers – are probably very limited in terms of visibility or authority. I guess the silver lining there is that all of his energy gets channeled into our big and diverse district. I don’t know if he’ll have much sway when it comes to the BQE, but Google News “Bergen Street housing,” and you’ll see what a difference one man can make if he’s THAT talented!
