Blue Angels and Thunderbirds Airshow Tuesday, April 28

NBC New York reports that, on this Tuesday, April 28 starting at noon, the nation’s two top aerobatic teams – the Navy’s Blue Angels (photo) and the Air Force’s Thunderbirds – will be over New York City and Newark as part of “Operation America Strong,” a tribute to frontline health care workers. The weather forecast for Tuesday looks encouraging.

    There looks to be one flyover down the Hudson right after 12:00 that would be visible from Brooklyn Heights, two more over downtown Brooklyn in the next 10-15 minutes, and a last one around 12:35

    “This 40-minute joint flyover is a salute to frontline COVID-19 responders.”

    According to the Washington Post, flyovers such as these cost $60,000 an hour.

    I know that in institutional terms it’s not a lot of money, and I’m not trying to rain on the parade, but I can’t help but think that if they (whoever “they” is here) really wanted to pay tribute to frontline responders, they would spend that money on protecting them or improving their livelihoods. This feels like a lazy stunt intended to signal something about boosting public morale. Low morale isn’t what’s killing people right now.

    My father was USAF and pilots need to fly regularly to remain sharp and accumulate enough hours to retain all certifications. When not at war, some flights are simply to fly. His buds used to travel RT to Mexico to pick up duty-free Mezcal. And if symbolism doesn’t count, why am I ruining a perfectly good sauce pan every evening at 7:00?

    These days, I wonder if pilots can maintain their edge using simulators.

    As to your saucepan, did you even ASK a hospital if they needed one before you destroyed yours??

    Needed to do grocery shopping, went to Fairway for that purpose as well as to catch the Blue Angels flyover.

    There were maybe three people besides us on the little promenade, facing the Statue of Liberty, and then we realized that instead of flying in front of us, that is, heading due south from the GWB to the Verrazano, the jets had cut over Brooklyn, behind us, and were leaving vapor trails over Cobble Hill. We couldn’t see ’em.

    Fairway was pretty empty at that hour — about 12:35pm. Had everything but toilet paper.
