During political upheaval in England, music-making shifted away from the courts and into the public arena. Musicians became freelancers and entrepreneurs, and developed their marketing savvy in order to survive. With works by Abel, J.C. Bach, Felice Giardini, Handel and Geminiani.
I’ll take some license and assert that this was the birth of “pop” music. After all, what is that but music created by professional musicians and composers for popular taste, as opposed to music created for aristocratic or courtly taste, or folk music arising from the people themselves.
