Fireworks Tomorrow Night

Community Board 2 advises us that there will be a fireworks display tomorrow (Sunday, October 2) starting at 7:00 p.m. in the East River near Pier 16, which is directly opposite Brooklyn Heights. It is not included in the list of legal fireworks displays approved by FDNY, so we don’t know who is sponsoring it.

    This was the loudest fireworks display I’ve experienced in the neighborhood. My building felt like it was shaking and it never does that. I’m not sure Gandhi would approve, but on a lighter note (and completely sarcastic), it’s nice to see the Indians of America assimilating to the american culture of being loud and obnoxious in celebration of a calm and peaceful man. All the evangelicals who celebrate Jesus by shooting guns and revving their engines would be proud…

    I’m sure your noise concerns are legitimate, although I feel it necessary to point out that Diwali has nothing to do with Mahatma Gandhi– it is the Indian festival of light. It is entirely appropriate to celebrate with fireworks.

    It’s also the Muslim and Jewish new year right now, so perhaps the neighborhood got to enjoy a “3 for one” celebration. I noticed a few Muslim families last night stretched out on the lawn next to Jane’s Carousel, also enjoying the show with the rest of us.

    Thank you for the clarification and information. I took “Remsen Street Dweller’s” post to mean that the reason for the fireworks was Gandhi’s birthday and I performed zero research of my own. Be well.

    If the fireworks were in celebration of Diwali, they were very early because that holiday does not occur until the end of October this year.
