“Save The View Now” Encouraged By Judge’s Deferral of Decision

As was earlier reported, the group Save The View Now claimed to have new evidence, in the form of building plans that show uses other than “mechanicals” for the rooftop structures on the Pierhouse and provisions in the governing land lease between the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation and the developers, Toll Brothers, that are said to clearly limit the heights of the Pierhouse structures. A hearing on STVN’s petition to re-open the case, which was earlier dismissed, was initially scheduled for July 30, but at the request of the defendants–BBPC, Toll Brothers, and others–was postponed until last Thursday, August 6. At that hearing, both sides presented oral argument (for a full description, see Mary Frost’s Eagle story). The judge, New York Supreme Court Justice Lawrence Knipel, announced at the closing that, while he had expected to be able to render a decision on the motion that day (no doubt meaning he had expected to be able to deny it), he would need time to consider the written submissions and oral argument before making a decision.

    The Heights community should support this legal effort. Support like attending court and calls to media. This includes call-in radio shows, signs in windows, stickers
    all basic presentation devices.

    The STV organization has to get serious about visibility and successfully getting into the broader public consciousness.
    The STV needs a high visibility rally in civic center to be the basis, or “hook” for harder, louder media coverage. I’d have a series of, say, black coffins cloaked in banners with inscrip tions “BBPC is Killing our Heights” or similar wording.

    Legal action at this point is certainly timely and warranted.
    But without ALSO turning public opinion , this organization will never nearly have the effectiveness it would have if it has the right public visibility.

    BBP appears to be demolishing the big squat building just below the promenade between Piers 4 and 5. Anyone know what’s going on there?

    Is it true that STV backers will picket the upcoming Ball in Brooklyn Bridge Park in early October?

    In support of Brooklyn Bridge Park activities, the BROOKLYN BLACK TIE BALL (which opposes the STV effort) will be co-hosted by Amelia Wilson and David Kramer. Sources tell me that the shindig will include abundant cocktails, a seated three-course meal, and high-end entertainment under a huge tent, with the New York skyline serving as a magnificent backdrop. The event will be held on the end of Pier 2, and will offer fantastic views of the harbor, the skyline and a pre-Toll Brothers’ full-scale diorama of the Brooklyn Bridge.

    Rumor has it that Brooklyn Blinders may be distributed for party-goers who do not wish to gaze at the hyperconstruction project under the Brooklyn Bridge.

    There will be 32 places at the sit-down portion of the Ball.
    Ten seats at $25,000 a pop; ten seats at $12,500 each; ten seats at $6,500; one seat at $1,500 and a final seat at $750.
    Hurry up and see if there is anything left.

    That’s been planned for some time. There will be another sound-cancelling berm at that location.

    Very interesting. Picketing the gala would be a way to drum up some attention. Is the gala for the conservancy or the park corporation. Some would argue that the BBP Conservancy doesn’t have a direct tie to the machinations of the BBP Corporation, so this would be misplaced. But it sounds like a potential strategy.
