On Friday the Brooklyn Heights Cinema will open Le Week-End, directed by Roger Michell and starring Jim Broadbent, Lindsay Duncan, and Jeff Goldblum. The Cinema will also be showing The Great Beauty, winner of this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Looking ahead to Wednesday, March 26 the Cinema will host its monthly Stand-Up Comedy Night, emceed by the lovely (and very funny) Heights resident Shelley Colman. Your correspondent attended last month’s Comedy Night and enjoyed it enormously. As we reported earlier, two recent substantial donations have brought the Cinema’s campaign to raise funds for a digital projector, which is essential if it is to be able to show new releases, past the halfway mark. More support is needed, though; you may contribute here.
Bargemusic has three “Masterworks ” concerts scheduled this weekend. On Friday evening, starting at 7:00, Daniel Milkis on violin and Arseny Tarasevich-Nikolaev on piano will perform works by Debussy and Prokofiev. On Saturday evening at 7:00, and again on Sunday afternoon at 4:00, violinist Mark Peskanov, cellist Nicholas Tzavaras, and pianist Nina Kogan will perform works by Schubert, Brahms, and Beethoven. Looking ahead to next Tuesday, March 25, the Brooklyn Historical Society will present a screening of the documentary film The Loving Story, about Richard and Mildred Loving, the interracial couple whose case led to the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision that found Virginia’s anti-misceganation statute unconstitutional.
