College Place Named One of 5 Best Blocks in Brooklyn

Described as “this side street off that side street,” The L Magazine named College Place one of the five best blocks to live on in Brooklyn.

The “ridiculously European” block does have a row of lovely homes–one of which (the studio apartment in blue) I almost lived in, but I couldn’t quite afford it. (I’d also heard rumors that MGMT rented one of the carriage houses as a rehearsal space? Any truth to that?) It’s also home to Love Lane Mews, the parking garage turned condo which I definitely can’t afford.

I have found it ironic that Love Lane, with such a beautiful name, is such a pockmarked street–one that looks like it should have a smokestack and Travis Bickle. But College Place does have a lot of charm. The only downside is it also has the back of CVS. But the secluded setting and beautiful homes lets you forgive a little.

    I’m amazed that The Love Lane Mews folks didn’t pay CVS to allow them to install a trellis and planters across the back of the building. A wall full of ivy could have upped the sales prices of those units a few percent.

    The block ends badly in cheap fencing which is a great pity.

    I guess the secluded character is a draw but there are some strong contenders around here – Garden Place, Grace Court, any of the fruit streets… It’s all subjective in the end.

    College Pl. is nice, but the best? They have CVS, chainlink fence, no views. It is nice, but there are lots of blocks I’d rather live on.

    You can ask the Mansion House (145 Hicks) about that!
    They have also cut down the trees,one by one, that were there (in their “garden”) when I moved in many years ago. Our block offered to replace them and care for them, but we were knocked down by the almighty co-op board! I think maybe now a resolution is in sight-
    I love living here and the quiet of the street cannot be matched. I love Grace Ct Alley–Hunt’s Lane ends in what appears to be a parking lot??

    Yes Heather! Andrew Van Weingarten of MGMT lived next door to me for several years. They moved last summer sadly :-( Great neighbors!!

    Are you kidding me? I think College Place is one of the least desirable blocks in the Heights. Garden Place, Monroe Place, Columbia Heights – and that’s just a start.

    I’ve seen Andrew VanWyngarden and the band on Love Lane twice (one of those times playing drums on the trash bins outside the jubilee center) and walking past city chemist as well as Starbucks so I’d say it’s probably true.

    FYI y’all. Planning is underway for a new wrought iron fence and garden with trees at the end of College Place.
