NY Post: Squadron Received $65K From Supporters Of Park Housing

The NY Post ran a story today claiming that State Sen. Daniel Squadron received more than $65,000 in contributions from supporters of housing in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The tabloid makes the connection because the donations reportedly came from members of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and Brooklyn Bridge Development Corporation which, it says, “support housing in the park as it undergoes renovation.”

NY Post: “Apparently, if the money comes from the right ZIP code, with the right connections, Squadron is just your average old-school pol,” said a source familiar with the deal.

Housing plans were under way when Squadron got involved in negotiations for the massive park renovation.

City Councilman Brad Lander (D-Brooklyn) said Squadron actually negotiated to reduce the size of one housing development and delay others for future administrations, which could opt to build something else entirely.

“Daniel fought very hard and skillfully to substantially reduce housing in the park, hopefully prevent it at Pier 6 altogether,” said Lander, who is involved with the park’s renovation.

    The NY Post is infamous for making up quotes from “unnamed” and “anonymous” sources, so I wouldn’t put too much stock into this. The article also doesn’t say where they got that $65,000 number, or anything else in regards to details about the deal.

    I know there was a deal because I heard Daniel describe the meeting with Mr.O and Mr W in a house on Monroe Place. This offer was made BEFORE he changed his position

    I have no brief for or against Sen. Squadron, but this absurd Post article doesn’t even rise to the minimalist standard of old-fashioned tabloid yellow journalism.And the Heights Blog should be disbarred from the guild for lazily giving it both credence and further distribution. What is the (unsourced, unsubstantiated) accusation here? That among Squadron’s campaign contributors are unnamed ‘supporters’ of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and/or Corporation? It would be odd if it were otherwise, given that his district encompasses the Park and adjacent neighborhoods where Park supporters (and charitable contributors)live (and vote).

    I do think there’s a legitimate story to be done on how the park housing deal got pushed through and whether/how political influence played a part. It always seemed odd to me that there hasn’t been a stronger opposition to this. Unfortunately, the Post article doesn’t give a lot of deeper insight on the matter.

    Elected officials must disclose campaign contributions. If you want to find out who donated and how much, you can look up “campaign finance contributions.”

    Big surprise. Now we know why Danny boy hasn’t been too concerned about Long Island College Hospital – out courting the folks that put housing in our parks and will cut down our libraries for housing, too.

    By the way, ditto on that snake Lander. Guess he hopes to get some of the cash from housing advocates inside our public parks, too. Both are crooks. Remember that folks next time you vote – get them to make promises in blood and hold their first-born until they do what they promise to do. Creeps both.
