Tenda: Stylish, Modern, Delish!

tenda.JPGTenda, billed as an Asian Bistro, offers diners on Montague Street a tantalizing mix of Japanese, Thai and Malaysian cuisine for a reasonable price.

Named after a small town in Japan, Tenda is a small but comfortable and sexy space, with not only table seating but an attractive sushi bar.  The menu is extensive but not confusing or overhwhelming, as it is very well organized.

Stand out starters include rock shrimp tempura with creamy spice sauce (it's not Nobu's, but definiately worth ordering), tuna tataki and shrimp shu mai.  All of the sushi is fresh, creative and artfully presented – try the Pink Lady roll!

The staff is more than helpful and well-informed.  The lunch specials are highly recommended.  The Bento box is just $7.50 and includes a salad (great dressing!); miso soup that tasted fresh and home made, not like some other sushi joints where you can pratically hear someone opening the pacakge of mix;  two fried shu mai;  brown or white rice and a choice of Teriyaki, Beef Negimaki or Chicken or Pork Katsu (fried cutlet).

I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki and was impressed by the sauce which was light, tasty and not cloyingly salty as it often can be.  The chicken itself was moist, all white meat and abundant.  The baby bok chok was a nice, tasty and fresh addition to the dish.  The avocado in the california roll was fresh and soft.  I always respect restaurants that pay attention simple details of their cuisine, it makes a difference.Other highlights of the menu include the thai style noodles and my personal favorite the Duck Fried Rice Malaysian style.

One last fun fact?  The Asian character that graces the back wall?  It means "Jump."  Told you the staff was well-informed! Tenda brings a stylish and much needed modern shot in the arm to Montague Street dining options.  One hopes others follow suit shortly.
