Last Minute Weekend Suggestions

The Brooklyn Film & Arts Festival will present Brooklyn Dynamics: Converging Lives on Film, a screening of three documentaries, at the Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street (corner of Clinton), starting at 7:00 p.m. Friday (December 7). The films are: I Remember Barbra, reminiscences of Brooklyn born Barbra Streisand (photo) by those who have known her (director Kevin Burns–note, that’s Kevin, not Ken–will be on hand to speak and take questions); The Hole, about a phantasmagoric landscape on the Brooklyn-Queens border patrolled by the Federation of Black Cowboys of New York; and iDance Video With Russians on the Brooklyn Bridge (the title is self-explanatory). Admission is free, on a first-come, first served basis. The doors open at 6:45. More information is here.

Also on Friday evening starting at 7:00, faithful BHB reader and some time commenter Lauren will host an event at Vineapple, 71 Pineapple Street. In her words, the gathering is

to celebrate the holidays and the closing of my current photography exhibit there. Many of my images on display have been taken in and around the neighborhood. It’s free and Vineapple will be offering drink specials. All are welcome to attend– the more, the merrier! I only post occasionally, but I read the blog every day and it would be fun to put faces to screen names.

Don’t forget Theater 2020’s A Radio Christmas Carol, based on the beloved Charles Dickens holiday classic, at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 21 Sidney Place, on Saturday, December 8, at 3:00 p.m. More details are here (scroll down). Admission is a suggested donation of $20, but no one will be told, “Bah, humbug, depart!”

Ready to get into the Hannukah spirit in grand style? Congregation Mount Sinai, 250 Cadman Plaza West (near Clark Street) is presenting “a Judeo-Latin-Jazz Holiday Adventure featuring Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble and our very own Cantor Shira Lissek” this Sunday, December 9, starting at 4:00 p.m. Admission is $20; or $8 for students.

Bargemusic, at Fulton Ferry Pier, foot of Old Fulton Street, has a full schedule of concerts Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and Sunday afternoon, as well as a free family oriented “Music in Motion” concert Saturday afternoon. Details are here.

Brooklyn Union Gas, KEYSPAN, National Grid had asked Barbra Striesand back to Brooklyn for years part of “Welcome Back to Brooklyn” and each year Ms. Striesand had declined the invitation sending her sister Roslyn Kind in her place.

Streisand had in fact shunned her native borough of Brooklyn until Barclays opened an arena.

Ms. Striesand did return to Brooklyn one time her appearance at BAM when campaigning for David Dinkins second term as Mayor the woman from Malibu had been booed so loud that David Dinkins had to call for order.

We wish that this sensation would create a community center or the like for Brooklyn with her name on it at this time we have nothing.

Many thanks to Claude and Heather who came out to Vineapple last evening to see my photography exhibit! It was nice to meet both of you. For those who couldn’t attend, my photos will remain on display until the end of the month.
