The Brooklyn Bugle’s Knishes Preview at Brooklyn Heights Cinema a Success

Accordion music, knishes, and egg creams, along with our Heather Quinlan, greeted upwards of 100 guests at the Brooklyn Heights Cinema this evening to see a preview of Heather’s work-in-progress film If These Knishes Could Talk. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz was on hand to give a short talk on the Brooklyn accent, which he, naturally, considers the true American speech (never mind those people who say the real McCoy is found in Buffalo). He also described how one of the best kosher delis in Brooklyn has passed from Jewish to Italian to Egyptian Muslim hands, while remaining kosher. Marty was treated to a birthday knish with candles.

During a Q&A session after the screening, Heather was asked what she plans to add to the film. She said she hopes to travel to New Orleans to interview speakers of the Yat dialect, which is similar to “Brooklynese”, and to East London, to interview speakers of the Cockney dialect, which she sees as the closest British analogue to a New York accent.

Brooklyn Heights Cinema owner Kenn Lowy prompted enthusiastic applause at the close of the event when he announced that the Cinema will be around for some time, as the landlord has said he wants to do the right thing.

Thanks so much, it was a great time, did my heart good :)

  • Topham Beauclerk

Heather, would you explain your doc’s title?

  • Master Of Middagh

Ha! I was wondering when Topham would come by with his anti-Semitic issues. I knew he just couldn’t let this post go by without trying to start trouble. Good show, bigot- you haven’t let us down.

Don’t answer him, Heather- he’ll just use it as the springboard for a racially charged remark.

  • Topham Beauclerk

Master Moron, you’re absurd. As I said in another post, get a grip on yourself. The title is self-evidently eccentric – knishes don’t talk and why knishes.

  • GHB

Because beignets wouldn’t worK in New York!

Congrats, Heather! And, good luck with the continuation of the project!

    Bravo, Heather.

Someone asked Topham’s question: “Why the title?”, during the Q&A after the screening last night. At the risk of misquoting Heather (and I invite her to correct me if I do), her answer was that knishes are, while perhaps not unique to New York, certainly characteristic. Also, to someone from another part of the country, the word “knish” would seem to invite the pronunciation “nish”, following the k-silent pattern of know and knock, while a New Yorker knows the k is sounded: KUH-nish.

When I attended middle school back in the Devonian Era, the knish wagon came around at 3 PM. My Puerto Rican classmates , as I, loved the coal-roasted potato knishes, but we all loathed the kasha knishes. If someone could direct me where to find the long-missed liver knishes, I’d be greatful.

Claude, Heather also said she likes the word “knishes,” she likes to eat knishes, and they bring back fond memories for her. (She related the experience of her “first knish.” I leave a repeat of that to Heather, as I wouldn’t be able to do it justice.)

Best Knish in NYC. Take the A to Borough Hall switch to F to Manhattan and get off at the Bowery Station. Worth the travel.

AL: right you are, and thanks.

Karl: I remember going to Yonah Schimmel’s to pick up knishes for my neighbor’s Chanukah party (yes, she had the traditional latkes, too–it was quite the potato-fest) and being enraptured by the aroma of the place. There’s an exterior view of Schimmel’s at or near the beginning of Heather’s movie.

I love knishes! Where is the closet knish to the Heights, in Brooklyn? Great news about Heights Cinema. Long live the neighborhood movie house!

Heather – you would do better to go to Ireland i/o England for the speech connection to the Brooklyn Dialect. It came from there.

  • Master Of Middagh

Hey Topham! Why no follow-up thanking everybody for answering your question? Oh, right! Because you didn’t care in the first place- you just wanted to call the woman who made this movie “eccentric” because she’s Jewish, so your work here was done…

  • Heather Quinlan

I’m actually Irish Catholic and eccentric.

  • Master Of Middagh

Good- then I guess Topham will leave you alone now. But I might start following you around… ;) And congratulations on your opening!

    Thanks, follow away!
