New York Daily News: Vow to Install Lights…: Looks like parkgoers won't have longer hours to enjoy the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in DUMBO after all.
A year after state parks officials promised to install new lights in the popular waterfront park so it could remain open past dusk, they told Brooklyn News that there are no longer any such plans in the works.
"It's not on any current list for the park," said spokeswoman Eileen Larrabee, noting she could not comment on promises made before Gov. Spitzer took office in January.
"I can't speak for what happened in the previous administration," Larrabee said on Friday.
State parks officials made the promise last August after the Daily News chronicled widespread frustration about the park's early closing time at dusk – which forces people out at one of the nicest times of the evening.
At the time, officials said new lights would be installed last September so the park could be open longer beginning in the fall.
A city-run park next-door is open until 1 a.m.
Park regulars were frustrated the work was never done.
"That's terrible," said Deike Benjoya, 28, a teacher from Brooklyn Heights who enjoys the park's breathtaking views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline.
