Open Thread: The Premier Apartment Building in Brooklyn Heights?

A discussion has broken out over at Brownstoner pitting 2 Montague Terrace and 1 Pierrepont Street against each other for the title of Brooklyn Heights’ Premier Apartment Building.

While neither complex would ever let the likes of us into the fold, we’re wondering what you think.   Comment away!

    What about 60 Pineapple St.?

    100 Clark.

I have been a guest in both buildings. 2 Montague Terrace wins without a doubt! The view from apartments facing the harbor are spectacular. Only drawback is that they are very particular (peculiar) about dogs — no dog visitors — even therapy dogs! The staff at One Pierrepont are much friendlier, however.

    You mean premier.

I’ve visited both buildings, and found them both very impressive, but agree with N.O. that Two Montague Terrace has the edge. I’ve never been to the “mansion in the sky” at One Pierrepont, but in my early days (1983 or ’84) I attended a party in the penthouse of Two Montague Terrace. While much smaller than its analogue at One Pierrepont, this was easily the most elegant residential space I’ve seen in New York City. The views, of course, were spectacular, but the interior appointments were even more breathtaking. I especially remember the polychromed carved wood molding on the archway leading from the foyer to the parlor.

It’s sort of in Cobble Hill – but 100 Atlantic Avenue is awesome.

    I like extra “e”s.

The roof deck of the St. George cannot be beat. That said, it’s closed for the next year. :(

this is kind of unrelated, but I am always envious of people whose apartments look out over the promenade. does anyone know the rent/mortgage/price premium for an apartment over the promenade vs one with no view in one of these buildings?

  • Pierrepont

NOOC, why a year?! Are they having to do structural work? That seems like a ridiculously long time.

  • sue

    yes it is structural

It’s kind of out of the nabe, but that Dakota building in Manhattan is definitely worth the trip.

This is definitely a tough call. When I was a kid in the early 70s, my best friend lived in 2 Montague Ter.. His family’s apartment was huge! They were on the fourth floor and there were at least three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The dining room, living room and den we are all facing the water. As for 1 Pierrepont, I also had a friend there. Although I only saw her family’s apartment once, the common roof area that all members of the co-op share is quite fantastic. Overall, I would probably vote for 2 Montague Ter., just because I spent so much time there in my youth.

However, I would give honorable mention to 2 Grace Court as being a co-op that has remarkably improved over the years. Many of the apartments have been joined together and turned into duplexes.

@neighborhood oberver–All buildings must allow service dogs (I”m not sure what you mean by a therapy dog). A refusal to allow service dogs is a violation of Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and its NYS and NYC equivalents.

has anyone been in the apartment building at the end of of Remsen street on the south side? It’s about 6 stories and overlooks the end of the promenade and the river. My good friend lived there on the 6th floor and was there often. The apartment was extremely large with a living room the size of a ballroom which had large windows with that beautiful view and a marble floor. There was only one apartment per floor, and I liked the fact that the elevator opened in your apartment.

Benita, do you mean the Patty Duke house? I looked at a great ground floor apartment in the building next to that one, but was put off by the fact that the realtor called a sunken living room a “split level”.

  • Pierrepont

    Thanks, Sue.

Who knows, maybe the rainy June is a mixed blessing for those in the St. George? Makes you miss the roof a bit less. Plus, none of us will see the fireworks this 4th, because of all the Hudson River hoohah.

    Hang in there!

Nabeguy, I don’t know which one is the Patty Duke house. The one I remember was the last on the south side of Remsen right at the end of the Promenade. You can never trust a realtor!!
