103 Injured in LIRR Derailment at Atlantic Terminal

WPIX11 and multiple news outlets are reporting the derailment of a Long Island Rail Road train at Barclays Center Atlantic Terminal.  Instead of stopping, the train which originated in Far Rockaway, hit a bumping block at the end of the track derailing one axle.

“As of 10:15 p.m., the injury count stood at 103, all of them non-life threatening, according to the FDNY. That figure is expected to change as officials remain at the scene and evaluate commuters who were on the train.”  The most serious injury reported was a possible broken leg.  A passenger interviewed after the accident described being “thrown” and hitting her head after the jolt of the impact.

At a subsequent news conference, Governor Andrew Cuomo called the incident a, “relatively minor accident, luckily.”  As of 10:25 am, subway service had not been disrupted but LIRR riders were cautioned to expect delays.

We will continue to report as more details become available.
