Trouble And Intolerance: Voices From Brooklyn Bridge Park

In an article titled “In Brooklyn Bridge Park Conflict, Neighbors See Trouble. Players See Intolerance,” the Times‘ Sarah Maslin Nir reports from our neighborhood and Brooklyn Bridge Park, talking to park users and neighborhood representatives about the issues that have arisen in recent weeks.

“Sometimes I try and avoid going on Joralemon,” said Aaliyah Johnson, 17, who is black and travels from Flatbush to play basketball. “It’s like they look at you, move their kids over like you’re going to do something, and clutch on to their purse. Your doing that — it just makes us not feel welcome. We just came here to play basketball.”

“The park planners have not done a good job at finding ways for people to get into the park and out of the park,” [Peter] Bray said.

Nir also reports that Brooklyn Bridge Park has received requests to replace the basketball courts with tennis courts, something that park president Regina Myer has ruled out.

“…getting rid of some of the most popular basketball courts in the city is decidedly not the solution,” she added, “and would fly in the face of everything this park stands for.”

Update: The article got the attention of MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, who tweeted it to his more than a half million followers, giving rise to a whole other comment section on this topic (and where I took the chance to shamelessly plug BHB).

Lol. You know he has driving gloves. Sheep’s leather, burgundy, with little round holes cut out at the knuckles.

  • StudioBrooklyn

I hadn’t put my imagination to such use but I like the imagery nonetheless, and for the record, I would happily drink Scotch with you and DIBS, whether there was to be a duel or not.

I’m pretty darned sure Teresa is a nice person, but I find her views on safety in the community quite disturbing. Therefore, I love this Sen. Bob Forehead!!!

  • Concerned

Me too! Although I can imagine DIBS having a 30 year old bottle for himself, while leaving us with the 12 year old…

  • Bornhere

Agreed. Even Halloween has changed over the decades (!), and despite some really out-of-control teens around Joralemon in recent years, seeing the wee ones so excited as they leave Garden Place almost makes it worth it.

    Just because he’s a conservative doesn’t mean he’s greedy!

    concerned for president :)

yeah we all are. even those of who live in the many rent stabilized units around here. we are all awful, nimby lovin racists. except a few on this blog “fighting for the cause :/”

  • redlola

as long as we ransack the block, steal phones, damage cars and get into ppl’s faces on the way over

  • Bornhere

Ugh — someone had a phone grabbed this evening on Henry between Joralemon and State at about 7:15 :(

  • Concerned

LOL! If you run for mayor, I’ll run for president.

  • Concerned

Damn. I am really sick of this. My family and I rarely make the walk down Joralemon, anymore. From Hicks over to BBP is one of the more beautiful streets in BK Heights, with various colored and unique townhouses, to the old time street, to the narrow sidewalks.
At least I can avoid the area. If I lived on Joralemon, I would seriously be consulting attorneys to find my options on filing a lawsuit. There’s no doubt their property value has sunk.

It’s newsworthy here, because it’s usually absent.
    That’s a good thing.

I hope they also permanently shut and dismantle that pedestrian foot bridge. When it was open , the same problems were also occurring in the NH. Loud obnoxious people , property damage, litter. Both the pedestrian bridge and Joralemon should be permanently closed to park ingress/egress.

  • Concerned

Yes. That bridge made the north heights a mess, as well.

Uh, question; How much $ is the police patrols made necessary by the park and the types it attracts and the by now many violent incidents, costing the taxpayers. Is reqina and her board going to reimburse the city for the situation THEY caused?

Nope, they or their confederates are going to flip the buildings they they’ll sail away with millions ard were left with little east new york on our doorstep.

And why? Because no one wants to take the steps to stop this….
