Apparently, there’s some sort of banking crisis happening and a bunch of them are folding into one another. Such is the case with the denim shirt wearing crew at the Washington Mutual branch on Montague Street. They’re movin’ in with the suits who work for their new daddy, Chase Bank, at Montague and Clinton Streets. Our pal Chuck Taylor sent us a nifty photo of WaMu’s goodbye note.

WaMu: say it soft and it’s still the sound made by a baby cow….sorry, calf.

I felt like I was taken prisoner on Saturday when I stopped by to deposit a check.

Was I allowed to do it with a machine? No. I had to follow someone into his little cubicle and watch him do it by hand while he sung Chase’s praises. Could I leave when that was finished? No, I was escorted to another cubicle to talk about investments, then another to talk about mortgages, etc.

I actually used to be a Chase customer but transferred to Wamu because I hated Chase. Still do.

Try TD Bank on the corner of Montague and Court — only slightly changed from the glory days of Commerce Bank — they still have a great hours, a guy to greets you, a line that moves quickly, tellers who are friendly, dog biscuits and change machines that usually work…

Well this opens up even more real estate on Montague. If we don’t get a bar I’m gonna lose it.

All this clamoring for a bar is starting to concern me. Haven’t you realized by now that this is a “behind-closed-doors” kind of neighborhood? If you want to partake of public drunkeness, move to the Bowery. Or has that become too expensive?
