Brooklyn Heights Rez Lena Dunham Participates In Two Pre-Election Political PSAs

Brooklyn Heights’ rez and HBO’s “Girls” creator Lena Dunham participates in two political PSAs as the Presidential election looms large. The first is an Obama-sponsored minute-long video titled “The First Time,” in which she muses about her first time… voting… in 2008 for Barack Obama. See it here.

Second, Dunham is among more than a dozen celebs who took to their webcams and lip-synced Lesley Gore’s 1964 hit “You Don’t Own Me” in a pointed political anti-Mitt Romney PSA. Spinner.ca notes, “The lip-syncing is interspersed with messages about (Presidential hopeful) Romney and the Republican Party’s plans to defund Planned Parenthood and overturn Roe vs. Wade, among other threats to women’s rights.”

Check out the full video below the jump.

Others participating in the clip that’s housed at Vimeo and has become a webbie sensation include Carrie Brownstein, Miranda July, Karen Elson, Leah Siegel, Alia Shawkat, Zoe Kravitz—and Gore herself, who says in a narrative after the video, “I recorded ‘You Don’t Own Me’ in 1964 and it’s hard for me to believe we’re still fighting for the same things we were then. Yes, ladies, we’ve got to come together, get out there and vote, and protect our bodies. They’re ours. Please vote.”

    HenryLoL, care to elaborate?

This is fantastic. It’s about time regular people stood up to those who want to take all of our freedom away. GET UP STAND UP.

Romney is a man who believes in CONVERTING JEWS TO MORMONISM after death.

    BLEEEEECH!

Please, please, please don’t start a flame war about this because you are wrong.

At least Mormons can have more than 1 wife. (If you can afford it!)

No wonder he wants to give other rich Mormons tax breaks. ha, ha.

A disgusting ad that demeans women as being brain dead sex objects. Most women, like most other voters, are not single issue voters. This ad is obscene., and demeans the office of the presidency.
It shows just how desperate Obama is.
Romney is at 50% or better in every major poll, and these bulgar, desperate ads won’t change that.
Romney has been at 50% or better in the Gallup poll for 14 straight days; today 51-46.
In the history of the Gallup poll since 1938, no candidate who has been at 50% or better in mid-October has ever lost.

@David on Middagh: I certainly can! One of our BH neighbors lent her celebrity status to a political candidate … equating voting for him to a person’s first sexual experience. I find that sad.

  • Curmudgeon

@PromGirl. Perhaps you may be right about Romney and the polls, but the Electoral College might elect Obama this year as it elected Bush in 2000. If that happens, the howls from the GOP would reach Mars and they will call for a Constitutional Amendment to eliminate it!

The shoe on the other foot would be the sublime revenge for the Democrats.

  • David on Middagh

    Knight: Oh.

PromGal: “Bulgar” ads? I didn’t find the video so grainy as that…

  • Mr. Crusty

PromGal once again demonstrates her utter lack of a sense of humor. I don’t believe you were the target demographic unless my estimates of your age are wildly off the mark. Don’t forget PromGal once said he feel “uncomfortable” going into a restaurant if the servers have tattoos or piercings. Can you imagine that? Wow. I can see why you are a Romney supporter.

As far as polls go, you do know we elect Presidents through the electoral college right? It would be very, very difficult for Romney to win without Ohio (no Republican ever has) and Obama has always been in the lead in Ohio. Time Magazine had him up by 5, CNN has him 4 up and the numbers have been pretty stable. Obama is leading in every other swing state with the exception of NC and FL. I would imagine you are going to have to suffer another four years of our Kenyan socialist communist fascist Muslim President. I for one am quite happy about that.

  • Mr. Crusty

I have a question for those that found the humorous commercial by Leah Dunham “disgusting”.

Did you find it disgusting when John Sununu said that Colin Powell only endorsed Obama because he was black? Or when he said the President was “lazy” (wink, wink) ? Or that he doesn’t understand “real” Americans?

How about Sarah Palin saying Obama was “shucking and jiving”.

How about Ann Coulter calling the President of the United States of America a “retard”?

How about a$$clown Donald Trump wanting to see the President’s college application and records? I mean Obama HAD to be affirmative action right? He didn’t earn heading the Harvard Law Review on his own merits right?

The right always gets SOOOOOOO offended and outraged by comments on the left but spew their racist dog whistles all day long without any problem.

I wish I was a resident of a swing state so that my vote actually counted for something. I’ve never wanted to pull the lever for someone more in my life.

  • John Wentling

Bimbos for Bama – how sad indeed.

  • Mr. Crusty

    Racists for Romney, even sadder.

  • http://inklake.typepad.com Peter

    David on Middagh:

    Cheers for the “grainy” joke.

But hey, Lindsay Lohan has endorsed Romney – though it’s not clear if she is in fact, registered to vote.

And they’ve got Donald Trump, Ted Nugent, and of course, Chuck Norris – promising 1,000 years of darkness if Obama wins.

    That’s a lot of darkness!

    Class acts, all!

Crusty, love your post. Couldn’t have said it better myself. From my perspective the real point her is reaching younger voters. The turnout on election day for young voters is pathetic. Nothing disgusting about this ad except for Puritans, prudes or those with no sense of humor (I guess that’s kind of redundant).

  • Monty

I love how the Romneyists think a woman using extremely mild sexual innuendo to entice women to do their civic duty is crass and offensive, but endorse the party of old men who are making legally binding policy decisions based on their stone age view of rape and pregnancy. The 2012 GOP is utterly debased, sexist, racist and downright foolish. Killing 100,000 Iraqis is great, but emergency contraception after rape is murder. I give up.

    Leslie Savan. at thenation.com
    http://www.thenation.com/blog/170869/lena-dunhams-and-ronald-reagans-first-time

On November 1, almost thirty-two years ago to the day, The Washington Post reported that candidate Reagan told a group of blue-collar workers at a Bayonne, New Jersey, bar:

“I know what it’s like to pull the Republican lever for the first time, because I used to be a Democrat myself, and I can tell you it only hurts for a minute and then it feels just great.”

But how much more appropriate in this election season, what with the GOP war on women in full swing, while Romney lies about his “binders” (wasn’t his idea, and MA had one of the *lowest* percentages of women in government by the time he left office. Officially left office, I mean, I don’t mean the year in total that he spent out of state, mainly on personal business) and, oh, he’d outlaw only 90 percent of abortions.

Read Joe Nocera today in the Times on Romney’s helping an utterly despicable pyramid-scheme marketer become a sponsor to the Olympics. Well, that’s off-topic I guess. Just don’t get me started.

  • Zorg

I used fake html tags for “quote on” and “quote off” and they got edited out. Oops. Savan ends with the Reagan quote, and then it’s me again starting with “But how much more appropriate…”
