Brooklyn’s First Pier 1 Imports Coming To Atlantic Avenue

Pier 1 Imports has signed a lease for a space just beyond Brooklyn Heights at 252 Atlantic Avenue and Boerum Place, a block past Court Street. The home furnishings chain will set up shop in a new two-story commercial building called Atlantic Galleria, along with gym chain Retro Fitness. It’s the retailer’s first location in Brooklyn. PromGal, your grandmother is correct-Penny Bridge Books was on Montague. I sometimes see one of the owners walking around the Heights.

And, does anyone remember the record shop on Montague? I worked there around 1975-76. It was next to the bagel shop.

It wasn’t a Pier 1, it was a non-chain store called Pier 69. I was upstairs in the space that later became Community books on the corner of Clinton and Montague in the later sixties (maybe around 1967 until maybe around 1970 or 71? But don’t quote me on those dates). It was a fabulous hippie-ish home furnishings, posters, candles, and gifts store. Very popular, but not a Pier 1, or even remotely similar. More a gift shop.

    Hortense! LOL, my sentiments.

@EddyEnergizer, I didn’t believe you because I grew up here during that time and don’t remember a Pier 1 (and would have remembered it) although I do remember that sort of hippie dippie place. Don’t take it personally though.

She’s Crafty, Nothing personal, I grew up her too, 49 years on Montague. As RF pointed out it may have been called Pier 16 Imports. I definitely remember it had “Pier”, “Imports” and a “1” in the name, I don’t recall the “6” but it could have been there, after all I am pushing 50 :)

This is from the Pier 1 website:
    Peace, Love and Papasans
Pier 1 Imports started as a single store in San Mateo, California in 1962. Our first customers were post-World War II baby boomers looking for beanbag chairs, love beads and incense. Pier 1 has carried a wide selection of merchandise through the years, from chocolate covered ants to clothing lines to life-size Spanish suits of armor.

That is just like the store that was on Montague. So it could have been an early version of the big box behemoth… or just a coincidence?

I bought a wicker chair at the store on Montague, definitely after 1968, when I was into that sort of thing. Pier something imports. Lots of wicker and other stuff there. The chair creaked a lot and fell apart after a mere 10 or 15 years use.
