    ColumbiaHeightster,
    I rented an apartment on Pineapple St. for two years before buying my co-op and as a renter I was treated like a second class citizen.
    I rented in a co-op building but when I had a serious issue I was totally disregarded by the board president. I assume it was because I was a renter. It was very sad and very discouraging as I had wanted to live here for many years but was treated very badly because I rented and did not own.

    When you rent or sublet an apartment from someone, they factor property taxes into what they are charging as rent. Therefore, in effect, the renter is paying the property tax on the apartment, not the owner. Same goes with co-op maintenance fees. People should look at simple economics before putting their noses in the air, lest they fall on their chins!

    @T.K., very nice.

    Have been woking out of the country and was away for six months. What’s with all the scaffolding around Brooklyn Heights??? One solid block on Pierrepont Street between Hicks and Henry is almost solid scaffolding on both sides; and, as long as I’m complaining, what is up with the “historic treasure” at the corner of Monroe Place and Clark? That building is disgusting and has been like that for much too long now! One more thing — might as well get it ALL out! — St. Ann’s church has had that scaffolding looming over Clinton Street for as long as I’ve lived in the Heights (over 25 years). Brooklyn Heights is an absolute treasure full of history and glorious architecture; but its beauty is fading. What organization or city department is charged with the caretaking responsibilities for our neighborhood? It it’s the Brooklyn Hts. Association, they’re either crippled by too many regulations or they’re just plain ineffectual. Does anybody else care about these things and/or wonder what the answers are?

    @Janny – agreed, scaffolding tends to linger a bit… the scaffolding at the corner of Pierrepont & Willow Sts went up (literally) in the middle of the night several months ago and there hasn’t been a single work crew there since (except to rebuild it after it was hit by a car)

    the model citizen is the building on the corner of Hicks & Pierrepont – scaffold went up there, work went on daily and the scaffolding disappears just a couple weeks later

    someone should ask the co-op board how they got their work done so quickly – and what the neighboring buildings can do to follow suit!

    I live at 55 Pierrepont St., which is one of the offending buildings. The building has been undergoing a major renovation both internally and externally. They are more than halfway complete with the project and I would expect some time in August the scaffolding will be removed.

    WillowSt. Neighbor:

    Thank you for your post on a Bklyn Hts. dentist. The very best of luck when you and your husband move to your new home in New England. I have often said that if i were to ever retire i would move to Vermont. Still love Vermont and New England, but have decided that if i retire, will do so to my apartment here in the Heights.

    Barbara Shernoff,
    Thank you so much for your kind words. I have really loved living in BH these past seven years but look forward to spending time with my children and three grandchildren who will be living just a half hour away from the town we have chosen to retire in. I also have a sister who lives a half hour away in NH. Family is everything and as retirees we hope to finally be able to spend quality time with the grandkids.

    Janny, we had a sidewalk shed on my building for over a year, for repointing and other outside work. Spring and summer is the best time for this work, so the sidewalk sheds bloom this time of year. Major work being done on 55 Pierrepont, plus Chuck’s building on Montague. Then there’s the perpetual shed around the church on the corner of Montague and Clinton, which has been up for over a decade. The shed around the St. George Tower was there for 3 years for replacement of setback and roof surfaces. My dream is for a BH with no sheds, but that’s never going to happen, is it?

    More comments. Food is uneventful. I paid $ 11 for a lettucecand tomato salad/ not much of anything in it. The bartenders do not know what type of wine they serve. Nothing Irish about the bar. More importantly I am a neighbor and the bar creates noise for it’s neighbors. People hanging out front at night being loud. The kitchen exhaust fan running all night. There us so much noise on Montague st it is becoming a problem.
    Any ideas? Don’t restaurants and business owners on montague st need to show some consideration to the residential neighbors ?
