Let’s Make It Happen: Rename Squibb Park to Adam Yauch Park

READ IMPORTANT UPDATE HERE.
Commenter “She’s Crafty” suggested in a comment on BHB that Squibb Park be renamed Adam Yauch Park to honor the Brooklyn Heights native and Beastie Boy MC who died earlier this month at the age of 47.

We couldn’t agree more. We hope you do too. A Facebook page has been set up to garner support and we encourage you to “like” it as well as voice and share your thoughts here in the comments.

Here’s our brief mission statement from FB:

Squibb Park in Brooklyn Heights, NY is currently undergoing a transformation into a skateboarding facility and gateway to Brooklyn Bridge Park. The Brooklyn Heights Blog community believes that it would be a fitting tribute to name it after Brooklyn Heights native, musician, humanitarian Adam Yauch (MCA) of the Beastie Boys. Adam Yauch Park sits directly across the street from the Harry Chapin Playground which is also named after a great Brooklyn Heights resident, musician and humanitarian. This is really moot now because they are talking about another park for MCA, but just to clarify, the whole of Squibb Park will be a skate park, not just part of it. It’s a tiny park to begin with and the whole thing will be for skateboarding, not just one area.

Let’s also just remember that the park was in ruins and closed for years, no one from the Squibb family did anything for it then, so why should they care now. But, in any case, State St. park is what is now under discussion, apparently, which is fine since MCA used to play basketball there from what I understand.

I would like to sign the petition to get the park renamed and have it be a tribute to Yauch. (I don’t have a facebook account).

Please dedicate it to him and let graffiti artists have a space for tributes.

  • A Squibb

I am a member of the Squibb family. The park is named for my great great grandfather. Of course, I think the name of Squibb should remain – as he was deserving of the honor. Anyone who does not know who he is or thinks he just invented suppositories should do a little research, particularly if you are a fellow Brooklynite. If you feel Adam Yauch deserves to be remembered, I am sure there are other locations that would serve. “Those who can not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Let the name stand as it is and find a better spot for Yauch

@ A – This is a closed matter as we’re now advocating renaming another park for Mr. Yauch in keeping with the wishes of his family and friends.
