Dog Free Lawn Signs Up at Pier One

sdc10021

It seemed whenever I was down at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1, the park ranger would spend 90% of his time telling people to keep their dogs off the lawn. Maybe now he can do something else with his time. This is the first time I saw these signs.

It makes me sad to see there are so many dog haters. Dogs are really wonderful creatures dedicated to loving humans and are a huge part of so many families. It isn’t fair for some families to not be allowed to picnic on a blanket while others can. I second what someone above said about my dogs being MUCH better behaved than so many children around in restaurants, planes, screaming, crying. That isn’t disruptive?

Dog owners will ignore the signs on the grass just like nannys with strollers ignore all forms of common courtesy on the sidewalks.

ProDog: this issue isn’t screaming kids or barking dogs. Its poop/pee and tearing up the lawn. You don’t see kids doing that very often. My mom has 2 yappy dogs and they make way more noise than any kids. There are other places for dog families to go. Why not picnic at the gigantic dog run?

I agree that dog owners will ignore these rules and be nasty to people who point it out. I pity the poor parks enforcement person who will spend their day telling people to get off their bikes, get dogs off the lawn and to get parents to stop searing their children on the death globs in the playground.

Lou: A dog run isn’t a place for a picnic. It is completely different. Most dogs, like most kids are well behaved and would sit on a blanket and obey their owners. You should expect people to be well behaved and not punish those who are for the potential few who aren;t. There are just as many non-well behaved humans who might litter, make noise, make out, throw things or all kinds of other behaviors, but the majority are good people. Same thing.

I just wanted to clarify something since so many seem to have missed this point. Nobody is saying -dog owners- can’t enjoy the lawn. They’re just saying you can’t have the dog on the lawn.

People are talking as if they have to leave an appendage behind in order to hang out in this park. It’s a dog. It can hang out at the house for an hour while you lounge on your blanket.

  • prodog

The point is families generally like to spend time together especially out on a nice day and families who include dogs are prohibited from all being together. There should be at least a section where these families can go like all other families.

    Oy veh.

I love going out for drives in my car in Sundays. I think i’ll park it on the lawn next to me because it’s not like it’ll leak oil on the grass or anything. I like having it around, so why can’t I have my car on the lawn with me? Why? Because it’s against the rules. You have a dog park right around the corner. I see no grounds for complaints about this rule. Next people are going to complain about the bike dismount rule and say it discourages alternative transportation.

  • prodog

Your car isn’t a living being part of your family. Your argument is ridiculous.

  • DAISY

I can’t wait for the human population to end!

  • my2cents

You’re right prodog. My argument was ridiculous. That was sort of the point. I think your argument is ridiculous too. You chose to own a dog. If that dog is not allowed somewhere, tough. And the fact that there is a designated place where your dog can run and have fun right near by makes your entitlement even more indefensible.

  • Publius

@DAISY. Thanks, we’ll let you know when the next BH misanthrope’s meeting will be held so you can guest speak.

  • prodog

People choose to have children in general. There really isn’t a reason not to have part of the nice grassy area dog friendly. I have no idea why people keep refering to the dog run which is totally different.

  • my2cents

They’re referring to the dog park because it is an area specifically set aside for dogs. Why can’t that be enough for you?

  • prodog

wow you sound bitter. the dog park is all dirt and for dogs exercising. the lawn by the water can be for sitting/picnicing/sunbathing by the nice water. why shouldn’t i be allowed to do that with the well behaved dog i love. even in just a designated zone?

This is nuts. Not everyone will always be happy with everything all of the time. That’s the way life is. You cannot enjoy your family AND your dog at a lot of places — we could all have lots of fun naming family-friendly, but no-dogs-allowed activities, venues, etc., that we simply accept and not get crazy about. But there are lots of great places families AND their dogs can be together, and many of them are not that far from Pier 1. So let it be, already. I LOVE dogs, and I had a wonderful dog for years; but there were times he couldn’t do what the human family members did. It’s okay. And those who can’t let go of this are making dog lovers/owners seem a bit over the top. Really. Relentless, circular complaining is not going to change anything for the good. (I think Cat just about nailed the issue at 11:43.)

  • prodog

eh so maybe I’m a bit over the top but I think well-behaved dogs should be able to go pretty much anywhere humans can go.

  • hahaha

Submitted a request for the park to be M0r0n free. Soon I will have the park all to myself.

  • Andrew Porter

Actually, the dog park used to be all grass and stuff, but overuse has turned it into a bare mess, except the part at the extreme south, where the hill is so steep no dogs go there.

My car, Herbie, is an integral part of my family, and he goers wherever I go. The hardest part of this is getting him to fit in the elevator going up to my apartment. I think I’ll take him to the park tis weekend…

  • Kids

Ironically I saw kids peeing in the park on the lawn this morning…. Get the no kids sign up.
