Upcoming City Point ‘Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’ Offers Booze & Food With Flicks

The UA Court Street Stadium 12 movie theater in Brooklyn Heights is about to lose its lock on the cineplex monopoly around town. Plans are confirmed for the 900-seat, seven-screen Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to open in 2015 in Downtown Brooklyn’s City Point. The upscale Austin-based biz is known for serving food & booze to theatergoers in their seats, offering indie & mainstream first-run movies, alongside repertory programming. Alamo has a strict no talking, no texting policy.

The theater will be built during Phase II of Fulton Mall’s mixed-use City Point development, which was updated this month with a new rendering from architects CookFox. The second phase also comprises two highrise residential rental towers (a 19-story with affordable housing & a 30-story market rate rental) and a permanent Market Hall selling fresh food and showcasing Brooklyn vendors.

City Point will be built in three phases. Phase I at One Dekalb was completed last fall. The second phase is expected to wrap in 2015, with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema as a primary anchor. It joins coming retail neighbors Armani Exchange, Century 21, H&M, TJ Maxx and Raymoor & Flanigan.

The theater chain currently has theaters in 10+ cities, including San Francisco, Denver and Houston; with plans to open locations on NYC’s Upper West Side and in Yonkers. The Brooklyn lease was first tipped by the Wall Street Journal in December. Charter Realty & Development brokered the 43,842/sf deal.

    I go to the Court Street theater all the time and have never had any problems. Great place to watch a movie. Comfortable and within walking distance.

    It is not about race or bank accounts, The theater is a magnet for trouble makers. I dare you to go there on a Saturday night to see a first run movie, then come back here and tell us what a pleasant experience you had and you’d gladly bring a date there the next time. I double dare you.
    On three separate occasions I had to get a refund because the rude boorish behavior of the general clientele. Here is a brief list: Loud talking, Making and receiving calls/texts, Screaming, Fighting, Throwing food and Throwing up. Once (the last time) they stopped the film while police ejected a troop of teens. Thats why it’s called the “ghettoplex”.

    Nothing will match my memories for going to see Die Hard IV midnight showing at Court Street. Whooping, texting, talking back at the screen, toddlers screaming. Bruce Willis winning the day. It was chaos and somehow awesome.

    I am not a racist, I judge people only by their actions or lack of. In the cace of the UA Court Street 12, enough of the patrons engage in unsophisticated, low class, rude behavior to make the experience unbearable.

    I’ve gotta agree with Arch on this one. It’s always a risk that people misinterpret your complaints as having a racist or classicist motive, but the Court Street multiplex has some serious crowd-control issues. I’ve seen 2 major movies there and to this day, all I remember about them was not the movies themselves but the unruly behavior of my fellow patrons.
