Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz took to the steps of Borough Hall to announce that a total of $2 million has been secure to fund Brooklyn’s first gay center, the Brooklyn Community Pride Center.
During Markowitz’s address, he stated that Brooklyn was the only borough to not have a gay center, despite the fact that it is “indisputably the lesbian center of New York.” While no location has been decided on, when the center eventually opens, it will offer free H.I.V testing and counseling, as well as gay social events.
Tom Smith, the president of the BCPC, said that there was “no reason the LBGT community should have to go to Manhattan like a second-class citizen to get help and support.” He said the search for the building will continue, with easy access by public transportation the top priority.
