Cops Credited with Bridge Grab

Our gang over at the 84th Precinct made a good grab this afternoon on the Manhattan Bridge, when they responded to a report of an emotionally disturbed person standing on the span’s outer edge. P.O. Anthony Brooks, an 18-year veteran of the department, engaged the person, a 38-year-old male, in conversation. Shortly after seeing the officers, the man turned and began to quickly walk away from them. Officer Brooks, with the assistance of P.O. William Cooper and P.O. Daniel Sandberg, followed and managed to grab him by the waist and pull him over the fence to their side. EMS responded and transported the subject to Bellevue Hospital.

This is a sad sad story. The 84th doesn’t have a lot to do so making this some kind of event is heartbreaking. The perp or victim or whatever you want to call him will sit at Bellevue, then sit in Central booking then get released and never get any actual help. Shame on you Homer. Shame.

    ?

Bravo to these guys for saving someone’s life.

  • tb

Look Quinn, they dragged the man off the bridge. They didn’t *help* him in any way.

tb- what do you suggest they had done? What have you done to help this man or anyone else for that matter? They don’t arrest jumpers, btw. They just take him to the hospital.

tb — PD saved this man’s life today; by so doing, this man will be evaluated — and maybe even helped. I would deem that a far better thing than letting him to die, don’t you?

And the 84 encompasses areas well beyond the Heights and has a lot to keep them busy. I see no “shame” in any aspect of this report.

I think the police from the 84th do a great job — used to see more of them walking the beat though — I miss that… Used to have cops all the time walking around Henry in North Heights. It’s a hard job being a cop – no matter the smugness you come upon from time to time. These guys need some more respect.

It is very difficult to be a police officer – and here they did thier job saved him and sent him to the hospital.

Police officers have a very hard job and some are excellent and others are not.
