“I heard the shots and I looked over and I saw this young kid with a gun, and shoot it again, and then ran off,” said one witness.

Other witnesses said there were two men, one of whom was carrying a backpack. Both fled east on Clark St., where one jumped in to a red SUV.

Meanwhile, neighbors attempted to render aid to the victim.

“He was moaning and saying that he couldn’t move. Then we went over to him and asked him if he had been shot and he said he didn’t know, he thought so,” said one resident of the building. “We asked him if he was in pain, he said ‘yes,’ he said he couldn’t move. At some point, somebody moved him somewhat, and we were able to see that he was bleeding.”

A woman identified as the victim’s mother appeared on the street shortly after the incident, crying out “my son! My son!” She rode in another ambulance and followed her son to the hospital.

The incident shocked the normally peaceful block. “I’m shaking. I have to admit that until I actually saw the blood, I was maybe a little…not believing it was real, but then once I saw it I really started to feel very shaky, and this is totally out of keeping with this building, with this neighborhood, it’s not at all what you would expect here,” said the witness.

Do we really tawk like dat?

A Bronx-born filmmaker is returning to her home borough to shoot a documentary exploring the New York accent.

Heather Quinlan, 35, has been working on the documentary, called “If These Knishes Could Talk,” for a year and half, making the rounds of the five boroughs.

BHB contributor Quinlan, whose film on New York speech, If These Knishes Could Talk, was Project of the Day on the fund-raising website Kickstarter, was interviewed on Columbus Plaza Thursday, and photographed by fellow BHB contributor Marc Hermann.

Frequent BHB contributor and ace photojournalist Marc Hermann, aka “Weegee”, has been awarded second place in the spot news category of the annual “Year in Pictures” contest held by the New York Press Photographers Association. Marc won the award for a photo, “The Devil Comes Out to Play”, taken during a fire at 132 Montague Street on February 1, 2009. The photo above is another shot Marc took of the same fire; the award winning photo can be found on the NYPPA website, or on Marc’s site.

NY Observer: Mr. Hermann, 27, has been covering the city’s seamy side for over a decade. His job is one for which he is—quite literally—well-suited. In a double-breasted suit, polished wingtips, and a fedora festooned with his press card, Mr. Hermann cuts the figure of a noir newsman at the city’s crime scenes and courthouses.

Or, to others, a cartoon character. Cops who don’t know him often holler “Hey Jimmy Olsen! Hey Clark Kent!” as he maneuvers around a crime scene

“I get a little sick of that,” he told the Observer, injecting his matter-of-fact tone with just a trace of indignation. “I’m not a Spiderman fan, I’m not a Superman fan. I’m Marc Hermann, a factual character.”

Brooklyn Heights Blog’s Weegee and the coverage of the recent suicide on Hicks Street are the focus of an article in the Sunday’s New York Times Magazine. The piece, written by nabe journo Virginia Heffernan, documents her quest to find out what all the police activity was about around 166 Hicks Street on August 5.

New York Times: Narrowcast News: That’s when I found weegee. This weegee — lowercase “w” to distinguish him from the famous street photographer of the 1930s and ’40s — is a poster and frequent commenter to a local site called Brooklyn Heights Blog. It turns out that he beat The Sun to many details of the Brooklyn-death story. Like the other Weegee, this guy is Johnny on the spot with crime, but he’s not as arrogant and elusive as the original. His name is Marc Hermann. He’s a news photographer.
