Danish Christmas Fair This Weekend

The Danish Seamen’s Church will hold its annual Christmas Fair this Saturday, November 19, from 11a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Church, 102 Willow Street (just south of Clark Street) and at Plymouth Church, Orange Street between Henry and Hicks, and on Sunday, November 20 from 11:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m. at the Danish Seamen’s Church on Willow only. A description of last year’s festivities, which were held on Friday and Saturday instead of Saturday and Sunday, is here. Thanks to reader Monty for alerting us.

Interfaith Gathering on Brooklyn Heights Promenade Marks Tenth Anniversary of September 11 Attacks

At 12:30 yesterday afternoon there was a gathering on the Promenade to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Cnter, the Pentagon, and the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. Above, The Rev. Al Bunis, of Plymouth Church, reads a portion of the Beatitudes, from the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 5, verses 1-9. More videos and text after the jump.

Dr. Ahmad Jaber, President of the Dawood Mosque, located on State Street in Brooklyn Heights, reads from an English translation of the Qu’ran, Chapter 6, verses 151-153.

Rabbi Samuel Weintrob, of the Kane Street Synagogue, Cobble Hill, chants in Hebrew a passage from the Book of Lamentations.

Other speakers at the gathering were: Rev. Julie Slok of the Danish Seaman’s Church, who read a Biblical passage in Danish; Deborah Hallen of Congregation Mount Sinai; Fr. James Root of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Cathedral; Imam Abdallah Allam of Dawood Mosque, who chanted in Arabic the Qu’ran passage read in translation by Dr. Jaber; Rev. Dr. John McGinty of Grace Episcopal Church; Rev. Jude Geiger of the First Unitarian Congregational Society; Brother Thomas Grady of St. Francis College; Rabbi Serge Lippe of Brooklyn Heights Synagogue, who acted as master of ceremonies; Fr. Ed Doran of St. Charles Borromeo Church; Syd Farley and Frank Kain of St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church; and Rev. Flora Wilson Bridges of the First Presbyterian Church.

At the conclusion of the spoken passages, the people were invited to join in singing “America the Beautiful.”

Danish Market Draws a Crowd

The upstairs room at the Danish Seamen’s Church was crowded this afternoon with shoppers contemplating toys, other gifts, and holiday decorations. (More photos and text after the jump.)

Your correspondent, about to enjoy a plate of æbelskiver med syltetøj (apple fritters with jam and confectioner’s sugar) washed down with glogg. The latter was delightfully warming on this chilly afternoon. The best thing about it, though, was eating the wine-soaked currants from the bottom of the cup. Danish Christmas Market Coming November 19-20

The Danish Seamen’s Church, 102 Willow Street (just south of Clark) will hold its annual Christmas Market on Friday, November 19 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Last year, the Market featured Danish food, crafts, Christmas ornaments, and music. In the garden behind the church, hot dogs, frikadeller, and glogg, as well as non-alcoholic drinks, were served. On Saturday, in addition to the market and backyard cafe at the Seamen’s Church, Danish open-faced sandwiches, pastries and other food, along with Carlsberg beer and soft drinks, were available cafeteria style in the undercroft of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 Henry Street (between Clark and Pierrepont). The Danish Seamen’s Chuch [102 Willow Street] held its annual Danish Fair this weekend. We chomped on hot dogs and guzzled Glogg while checking out all the wonderful Christmas ornaments for sale. While Mrs. Fink insists that Glogg is just “mulled wine” our Danish friends at the Fair say, “Nej glog er meget bedre.”

The Danish Seamen’s Church will host its annual holiday season fair on Friday, November 21 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., and on Saturday, November 22 from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. The Fair will be held at two locations: “Danish Food, Crafts, Christmas Ornaments, Music and much more” (last year the “much more” included glog) will be available at the Danish Seamen’s Church itself, at 102 Willow Street (just south of Clark); while a “Restaurant with Danish Open Faced Sandwiches and authentic Danish Pastry” (and which last year served, among other refreshments, Denmark’s great Carlsberg beer) will be at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 Henry Street (between Clark and Pierrepont).

Having attended this event last year, your correspondent can vouch that it’s not to be missed.
