Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Return to Brooklyn Sidehttp://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/88323 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/88323#comments Fri, 03 May 2019 02:37:11 +0000 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/?p=88323

The New York Post reports that this year’s Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks

will return to the Brooklyn Bridge, where tens of thousands of pyrotechnic shells will be launched, as well as from four barges along Pier 17 in the Seaport District, company officials announced Thursday.

It adds that

July’s fete will feature more than three times the explosive power than previous displays and will incorporate the [Brooklyn B]ridge’s entire 1,595-foot span.

New Year’s Fireworkshttp://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/87715 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/87715#comments Mon, 31 Dec 2018 00:04:19 +0000 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/?p=87715

This year’s New Year’s Fireworks, which begin promptly at midnight, when the ball drops, should be clearly visible from the Promenade and other Brooklyn Heights vantage points, as they will be launched from a barge near Liberty Island. If you hear some explosions and see flashes of light to the east, that’s because there is another fireworks display being launched near Prospect Park.

Where to Watch the 4th of July Fireworkshttp://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/86617 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/86617#comments Mon, 02 Jul 2018 22:35:10 +0000 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/?p=86617

This year the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks will be launched from seven barges staged in the East River between East 23rd and East 40th Streets. Per the official website, “the fireworks may be viewed from any area in Brooklyn with an unobstructed view of the sky above the East River.”  Macy’s does not recommend Brooklyn Bridge Park as a vantage point. So, cozy up to a friend with a balcony on a high floor or rooftop access.

The New Year’s Fireworks will go off at the stroke of midnight, just as the ball is dropping at Times Square. They will be launched from near Liberty Island, and so will be easily visible from the Promenade, or from Heights rooftops. Unfortunately, the forecast temperature at that time is fourteen degrees Fahrenheit. Dress for warmth!

Fireworks Tomorrow Night (Yes, Again, and This Time Close)http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/84855 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/84855#comments Sun, 01 Oct 2017 03:29:17 +0000 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/?p=84855

There will be fireworks tomorrow night (Sunday, October 1) starting at 7:00 PM. According to the NYC Fireworks Displays site, they are to be from Pier 16, East River, which is directly opposite Brooklyn Heights, so they will be clearly visible from the Promenade (and audible throughout the neighborhood). The sponsor is the Association of Indians in America. We’re not sure of the occasion, as Indian Independence Day was August 15 and Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, doesn’t come until October 19.

There will be fireworks tomorrow night (Saturday, September 30) starting at 10:55 PM. They will be launched from a barge off Red Hook, opposite the Liberty Warehouse. They might not be visible from all parts of Brooklyn Heights or the Promenade because of intervening tall buildings, though they should be visible from many rooftops. They will certainly be audible.

Will Fourth of July Fireworks be Visible from Brooklyn Heights?http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/84136 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/84136#comments Mon, 26 Jun 2017 03:04:49 +0000 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/?p=84136

Update: Here’s reaction from local business owners. The Eagle reports that this year’s Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks will be launched from barges on the East River beteween 24th and 41st streets in Manhattan. Unlike the past two years, there will be no fireworks launched from barges anchored below Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO. The Eagle story quotes Macy’s as saying Brooklyn Bridge Park “is not a suggested location to watch the display due to its obstructed views.” It’s possible that a somewhat less obstructed view could be had from the Promenade because of its elevation above the level of the park. Those lucky enough to have access to rooftops on tall buildings might have a better, but still not perfect, view.

The answer to the question in the headline, though, is “Yes.” As the Eagle story concludes:

But fear not, Brooklynites. The Fourth Annual Jersey City Freedom and Fireworks Festival at Liberty State Park in N.J. will be visible from the Promenade and BBP.

Fireworks Tonight; or, More Likely, Tomorrowhttp://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/83809 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/83809#comments Sat, 13 May 2017 14:07:27 +0000 http://brooklynheightsblog.com/?p=83809

This in from Notify NYC:

Notification issued 5/13/17 at 9:00 AM. There will be a fireworks display near the Statue of Liberty tonight, 5/13, at approximately 11:30 PM. In the event of inclement weather, the fireworks display will take place on 5/14.

Given the forecast, I’m betting on tomorrow.

Update: Looking at the radar weather map has convinced me that, contrary to predictions, the rain, or most of it, should be over in a few hours (it’s now 5:05 PM), so we may well have fireworks tonight. According to the NYC Fireworks Displays site, the fireworks are sponsored by “NECO Awards.” A further web search revealed:

The Ellis Island Medal of Honor is an American award founded by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) which pays homage to the immigrant experience and the contribution made to America by immigrants and their children. The medals are awarded to native-born and naturalized U.S. citizens.

Notify NYC advises us that there will be a fireworks display tonight (Friday, November 25) starting at 10:00. The fireworks will be launched from a barge off the Liberty Warehouse in Red Hook, so they will be to our south, instead of east as usual. They may not be easily visible from the Promenade, though they will certainly be audible throughout the Heights. They may also be seen from rooftops or south facing windows in tall buildings. It is not included in the list of legal fireworks displays approved by FDNY, so we don’t know who is sponsoring it.

Update: I was wrong. Tonight’s fireworks are on, too. Right on schedule. Tomorrow evening (Friday, October 28) starting at approximately 11:20 there will be a fireworks display. It will be launched from a barge near Liberty Island, and should be easily seen (and heard) here in Brooklyn Heights. The NYC Fireworks Displays site lists the sponsor of the event as “N/A”. The City site lists two displays; one this evening (Thursday, October 27) and the other tomorrow. However, Notify NYC has notified us only of the one tomorrow. Perhaps tonight’s has been cancelled because of weather.

Tomorrow (Saturday, July 16) evening starting at 9:15 there will be a fireworks display. It will be launched from a barge near Liberty Island, and should be easily seen (and heard) here in Brooklyn Heights. According to the City’s fireworks site the display is sponsored by Kenneth Bronstein. A quick web search shows a Kenneth Bronstein to be (at least as of 2009) president of New York City Atheists. So, we may be seeing and hearing some big bangs for the proposition that there’s nothing behind the Big Bang.

They just won’t be as close (or as earsplitting) as we’ve had for some years. At midnight, a fireworks display will be launched from a barge near Liberty Island. These will be easily visible (and heard) from the Promenade, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and strategically placed Brooklyn Heights rooftops. This should draw some spectators from afar, but probably not as many as in previous years; more should be swarming to Battery Park City. There will also, as usual, be fireworks from a spot near Prospect Park.
