Weather this weekend bids to not quite crack the ninety degree level, and some thunderstorms are expected, mostly late in the day. On Saturday, July 14, Brooklyn Bridge Park will be celebrating City of Water Day with kayaking in the Pier 1 boat basin (photo) (10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), and two activities great for parents and kids: “seining the river wild,” in which Park Conservancy and Coastal Marine Resource Center staff will use a twenty foot seine net to catch, show, and then release creatures living in the East River, near the Main Street (DUMBO) park entrance (10:30 a.m. to noon); and aquatic arts and crafts with Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy Playground Associates at Pier 6 (10:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.). These events are free.

Also on Saturday, the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival will conclude with Family Day, to be held on the Pier 3 uplands from noon to 3:00 p.m., featuring an MC freestyle competition, African and Brazilian dance classes, educational and social awareness activities, how-to workshops, art demonstrations, and live performances. This event is inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative. Tickets are available here.

Bargemusic, at Fulton Ferry Pier, foot of Old Fulton Street, will have its usual free, family oriented “Music in Motion” concert on Saturday afternoon, starting at 3:00. There will be a “Here and Now Series” concert Friday (July 13) evening, starting at 8:00, featuring works of contemporary composers performed on violin by Miranda Cuckson. On Saturday (8:00 p.m.) and Sunday (2:00 p.m.) there will be “Masterworks Series” concerts, featuring works by Bach, Mozart, and Haydn performed by Gerald Robbins on piano along with the Braude Ensemble with members of JVNY. Don’t forget Theater 2020’s reading of Lady Susan, to be held Saturday from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. in the air conditioned comfort of St. Charles Borromeo Church, 21 Sidney Place. Admission is free.

Looking past the weekend, on Monday, July 16, starting at 7:00 p.m., Amor Towles, author of The Rules of Civility, will read from his novel and afterward be avaialble for discussion and book signing, at the Granite Prospect, Pier 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park. Admission is free. This is part of the Books Beneath the Bridge series, and is sponsored by Greenlight Bookstore.

The historic tugboat Pegasus and Lehigh Valley Barge No. 79 will arrive at Pier 6, Brooklyn Bridge Park (foot of Atlantic Avenue) this Thursday, July 14, and remain until Monday, July 25. This Saturday, July 16, is City of Water Day, and Brooklyn Bridge Park will participate with tug and barge tours, music, and other activities at Pier 6, a kayak demonstration at Pier 5, and free kayaking at Pier 1 (schedule here).
