Inclement weather prevented your correspondent from making his usual Brooklyn Bridge transit this morning, but a break in the rain late this afternoon allowed for a few shots from the Promenade.
There, peeking over Regina Ridge, are Pier 1′s first five–or is it six?–trees. More are soon to come, I’m sure. Removal of the decking from the southernmost part of Pier 1 continues, exposing the part where the “A” and “C” train tunnel runs underneath, so no pilings were driven there. More photos and text after the jump. Continue Reading →Gun Toting Thieves Reality vs. Hype: 84th Precinct Police Blotter – 10/27/09
After last week’s rash of robberies, there was a significant drop in thefts in Brooklyn Heights this week.
First, an update on several crimes last week involving gun play. Despite hyperbolic Brooklyn-based tabloid reports, police officials said today that the three robberies involving gun-toting thieves were not linked. Continue Reading →

Full Alternate-Side Parking Restored Nov. 9
Beginning Monday, Nov. 9, alternative-side parking regulations will return to all of Community District 2, following the final phase of sign-replacement that began this summer.
Since July, signs were replaced throughout Brooklyn Heights with new, reduced street sweeping regulation signs. Since Sept. 8, signs were replaced in the small area south of Joralemon Street and north of Atlantic Avenue (but not including those two streets). Map of the restored area after the jump. GUDER, Graffiti Goon, Defaces North Heights
A Graffiti Goon using the “tag” GUDER is on a rampage in the North Heights. BHB community member Andrew Porter sent us photos of some of this social misfit’s “art” sprayed on various surfaces around Hicks Street including the side of the lovingly restored 68 Hicks Street. Continue Reading →
Brooklyn Heights Brahmin Goes Bonkos Over Tourist Choppers
Former BHA president and retired advertising kingpin Neil Calet lets loose on the city’s plan to allow more tourist helicopters to operate out of the downtown Manhattan heliport, directly across the East River from Brooklyn Heights. The NY Post speculates that could mean an additional 75 tourist flights above Brooklyn Heights per day.
Chopper noise is so bad now, Calet tells the paper that “[w]e can no longer sit on our balcony because even nose-to-nose conversation is impossible.”
The Brooklyn Heights Association has publicly stated that it wants an outright ban on the helicopter flights.
Big Accident on BQE in Brooklyn Heights
This dispatch and photos came in from Matthew Parker this afternoon:
Queens bound Traffic has been completely stopped for 45 minutes.
Multiple-vehicle collisions, including a mini schoolbus with kids. One oil tanker involved that was punctured and leaking. Several passenger cars also involved.
Three ambulances taking away injured drivers and passengers. Some injuries look serious. Several trucks and cars have damage.
One witness said oil truck could have gone over railing to fall on Brooklyn bound traffic, but the driver controlled the truck.

A Beautiful Day at the Howl-o-Ween Parade
Perfect Paws and the Friends of Hillside Dog Park held their annual Howl-o-Ween Doggie Parade today (10/25) on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. BHB publisher Homer “Shaky Cam” Fink was there and caught the parade on video. The Phantom of the Opera was today’s overall winner and Giuseppe the airplane (and his pilot Matthew) won for best group.
We’re sure Hillside’s Matthew Parker will have more details here soon as well.
Proceeds of the parade go the the following charities:
• Friends of Hillside Dog Park
• Animal Kind, a no-kill cat shelter
• Blue Rider Stables, a therapy horse stable
• Brooklyn Animal Foster Network
County of Kings at Public Theater
County of Kings, written and performed by Lemon Andersen, directed by Elise Thoron at The Public Theater through November 8th, is a tour de force coming of age story set primarily in Brooklyn, Kings County. Produced by Spike Lee and the Culture Project (w/Steve Colman, Jayson Jackson, Tom Wirtshaffer), Andersen explodes onstage “car-jacking a sonnet,” spitting, rhyming and dancing his way through a fractured childhood in Sunset Park that culminates with a young man finding his voice in the most influential cultural movement of our time, hip hop. Effed at the Nightmare on Court Street
Effed in Park Slope got a taste of our good ol’ fashioned Nightmare on Court Street, the UA Court Street Stadium 12. While we already know that the place is a certified celluloid cesspool – filth, a fire and another fire and “questionable” bag searches – our Park Slope blogger friend hadn’t really experienced the full monty of fun the UACSS12 has to offer. Behold the description of the horror… THE HORROR… between a Baby Mama, Another Woman, the Ineffective Security Guard and a Packed Theater at Effed in Park Slope now. Warning the language is salty and the drama not for the faint of heart.

Packer Pumpkin Patch Fun
As we approached the Packer Pumpkin Patch on Joralemon Street today, a toddler was begging his Dad to let him stay. His cries of “…but I don’t want to go home” faded away in the distance while we snapped these shots of today’s funrdaiser for the Packer Collegiate Institute. Continue Reading →
Martha Stewart Visits Brooklyn Flea and That’s a Good Thing
Our pal PezzKandy caught this pic of Martha Stewart filming her TV show at the Brooklyn Flea in DUMBO today. Reports earlier this week suggested she’d be hitting Saturday’s flea in Fort Greene but we guess yesterday’s weather moved the whole shebang to our neck of the woods today.
