CraigElimeliah via Twitter

The Schnitzel & Things truck is in DUMBO right now according to DUMBONYC and @CraigElimeliah via Twitter.  They’re at the corner of Adams and Front Streets.

Have your tried it? Good?

What’s it all about? From their website:

Our goal is to serve delicious, fresh food to hungry New Yorkers on the go. We will serve three different kinds of schnitzel and a variety of wonderful side dishes using all natural ingredients at reasonable prices.

For those New Yorkers who are unfamiliar with the schnitzel, let us provide you with a brief description. Schnitzel is a hand pounded, lightly breaded thin cutlet fried to golden perfection. It is traditionally served with a lemon wedge and a side of Austrian potato salad. Our varieties of schnitzel include chicken, pork and cod and all are made fresh to order.

Top 10 signs it’s summer in Brooklyn

img005015

1.  The sprinklers are on every day at the pocket park at the end of State Street.  Even though I feel somewhat foolish I do join in the fun from time to time.

2.  Even the prettiest of flower boxes are beginning to look a bit bedraggled.

3.  Mandals (man sandals) are everywhere.

4. Kids spend the day in their bathing suits (well at least this was true where I grew up)

5. Every other person is eating ice cream or frozen yogurt.

6. The pool at the local YMCA is never NOT crowded.

7.  The streets are deserted on the weekends.  Where is everyone, and can I go with you next time?

8. Outdoor cafes are packed and the Margaritas are flowing.

9. The drone of helicopters has been replaced with the hum of air conditioners.

10.  And the number one sign that it’s summer in Brooklyn is ____________________.  You fill in the blank.

Holler and Squall

Holler and Squall: 71 Atlantic AvenueHoller and Squall: Things Unlimited at 71 Atlantic Avenue just opened their doors for business at the dead end of Atlantic Avenue.  I’d been walking by and loved the name, peeked into the windows, and loved the aesthetic.  Today I talked to Zachariah Wing, co-owner with his wife, Gillette.  I asked him, “How would you categorize your shop?”  He said, “Collectible oddities, antique industrial, something for everyone.”

In the far corner, I saw a Singer Sewing Machine, exactly the kind my grandmother had in her kitchen.  As I looked at their model, it shone with black enamel with gold transfer, dated June 14th, 1910.  It still works, and I still remember how to thread it.  Amazing.  I saw a Weymann Banjo, and two children’s school desks, one which had an original square slate.  I love the collection of dolls; Madame Alexander’s Indonesia, several Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls, and a little bisque boy, plus an adorable collection of doll’s clothes; knickers, dresses, and nightgowns.

I tried on two rings, circa 1950, gold filled, and checked out an American Shaving Mirror. The husband and wife duo also create custom shelving from replaned lumber; old joists from construction sites.  The name of the store comes from a blue grass song by Bill Monroe.  I asked Zac, “Who opens a business in the midst of a recession?”  He answered, “It’s the perfect time, we could never have been able to afford such a great space on Atlantic.”  Stop on by and enter their carefully curated, endlessly fascinating collection of curios and antiques.  They’re only open on Saturdays and Sundays, but you can call ahead for a private visit.

Brooklyn Heights Man Builds Boulders for Climbing

Twenty-five year old Brooklyn Heights resident Stephen Spaeth is set to open Brooklyn Boulders, a former Daily News garage filled with “rocks” to climb for fun, on August 5.    The NY Daily News writes about the Gowanus outlet today:

NY Daily News: “It used to be all the serious climbing gyms were in Jersey,” co-owner Stephen Spaeth, 25, said. “Not anymore.”

The 18,000-square-foot building was built about 1900 as a distribution center for The News and served as a garage for delivery trucks until about 1993.

It was then used as a storage facility until Jaze Realty bought it for $10.5 million last year. The News’ camera logo is still on the facade.

Spaeth and his partner spent nearly $1 million on upgrades after leasing the space in March, installing new windows and padded floors.

“There are lots of climbers in New York City,” said Spaeth, who lives in Brooklyn Heights and has been climbing for 15 years. “Now there’s a real climbing gym, too.”

The North Heights is beginning to bubble up as a “go to” destination with the opening of the Brooklyn Heights Wine Bar, the continued popularity of Jack the Horse, Noodle Pudding, Henry’s End, Siggy’s and the Henry Street Ale House as well as the Brooklyn Heights Cinema.

84th Precinct Police Blotter – 7/22/09

Looks Like Tea Lounge is a Go

photo_edited-1

This notice of a CB2 public hearing  has been posted at the site formerly known as Palmira’s [41 Clark Street] announcing Tea Lounge’s application for a liquor license at that location.  BHB broke the news in March that Tea Lounge’s Jonathan Spiel was eyeing the location and was hopeful that he could strike a deal with the building’s management.

CB2 will hold a public meeting on this and other issues at 6PM on 7/27 at LIU’s Jonas Board Room at Flatbush and DeKalb.

BHB’s Sarah Portlock will have an update on this story tomorrow.

[Thanks to BHB tipster "Jordan" for the heads up]

Pier 6 Ferry Dock a “Go”

As we noted in a previous post, a new ferry stop near the foot of Atlantic Avenue is one of the locations from which expanded ferry service to and from Brooklyn will be considered at a hearing to be held at Kings County Community College tomorrow evening. Tomorrow morning, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will announce the construction of a “water taxi dock” at Pier 6, now being developed as part of Brooklyn Bridge Park and situated near Atlantic Avenue. According to the press release, “[T]he creation of the new dock will provide direct ferry service between Brooklyn Bridge Park and Governors Island.” Whether this will replace the free Saturday-only ferry from Fulton Landing, and whether it will be free, or run on a more frequent schedule, remains to be seen. Also, that the terminal is being called a “water taxi dock” raises the question whether New York Water Taxi, with its extensive service to Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Upstate, will stop there. We’ll keep you advised as more information becomes available.
