Cops are investigating whether an incident last Saturday involving one older boy and three younger teens is related to the recent spate of similar crimes in the neighborhood. On April 25, an 18-year-old was mugged as he was walking westbound on Livingston Street at 7 pm. The boy was between Court and Clinton streets when three younger boys surrounded him and demanded his money. Cops quickly arrived at the scene, and arrested the three youths, ages 13, 13, and 15.
Ivanov’s Monday court appearance
Ivaylo Ivanov — who allegedly spray-painted swastikas along Remsen Street in Spetember 2007 and was later discovered to have an arsenal of explosives in his nearby apartment — appeared in Brooklyn criminal court on Monday morning for a pre-trial hearing.
Ivanov has pleaded not guilty to the incidents, which include charges of graffiti, criminal mischief, and bias crimes, and is currently held on $300,000 bail. On Monday, he stood quietly with his hands handcuffed behind his back, dressed in a thick beige sweater, black pants, and sporting a thin goatee.

Parrot Strolls Montague Street
We spotted Brooke McAnally and her Senegal parrot Zuri walking down Montague Street on Sunday afternoon. While Zuri has only been out of the house a few times according to her owner, they both seemed to be enjoying Sunday’s spectacular weather. McAnally has lived in Brooklyn Heights for seven years and has no other pets, telling us, “a bird requires a lot of attention!”
Atlantic Avenue Shell Re-opens
From the BHB Inbox:
The Shell station is now open on Atlantic & Henry. As of Friday, only (!!!) 11 cents higher than the station on Hamilton Ave & Henry (or Hicks, I forget) and only 30 cents more than the NJ station where I filled my tank on Saturday :)
Heights History:The Nabeguy Collection

nabeguy photo
BHB community member Nabeguy has posted many vintage photos of Brooklyn Heights to the BHB Photo Club on Flickr. About the pics he says:
These photos were taken in November 1961 by my father, who, along with other like-minded neighbors, was in opposition to the proposed zoning variance that would allow for construction of the Cadman Towers. He wanted to illustrate the variety and depth of the 19th-century architectural heritage that was at stake. In one of his last-ditch efforts to forestall the wrecking ball, he lobbied to have the building on Cranberry St. in which Walt Whitman set the type for “Leaves of Grass” designated a National Landmark. Obviously, his attempts were in vain, but we do now have the Whitman Townhouses, and these photos, as reminders of what was lost.

20 Pierrepont Scaffold-Free; 65 Montague Next?

Window replacement work at 20 Pierrepont having been completed, the scaffolding that has blighted the block between Hicks and Columbia Heights has finally been removed, revealing some lovely flower beds. Meanwhile, workers have been seen replacing windows on the 65 Montague side of the same building complex, giving hope that the scaffolding there will soon be gone.
Sneakers Enjoy Great Weekend Weather
This pair of sneakers seemed to be enjoying the great weather Saturday in Brooklyn Bridge Park along with the rest of us. It was also a wonderful day for a wedding – congratulations to Cobble Hill Blog contributor EJ Cory and his wife Beth on their marriage yesterday which was held in the park at 5:30pm. Grace Church’s Reverend Stephen Muncie officiated.
