The BHB Ten: 2008
We thought it would be interesting to compile a list of 10 people who live or work in Brooklyn Heights who we think made an impact on our neighborhood, our city, our country or the world. We asked for your input as well and the list reflects that.
None of those named in the BHB Ten were notified ahead of time regarding their selection. If you’re on the list (or if you didn’t make it!) we welcome your comments.
And now, the first ever BHB Ten: Continue Reading →
Is it Over Yet? 2008 in Review: October – December

The final three months of 2008 was a roller coaster ride to say the least – from the November election’s winds of change to the ominous storms brought on by epic financial failures. And while what will happen in 2009 is a mystery, we’re just glad the year is finally over. Here are the “highlights” from the final three months of 2008: Continue Reading →

The Third Quarter of 2008 was not only chock full o’ news, it also marked the highest traffic in BHB history more than doubling the audience the site had in Q3 2007. Here are the stories the held Brooklyn Heights’ interest: Continue Reading →
50 Henry Will Continue as Wine Bar from Owners of Henry’s End and Cranberry’s

Mark Lahm of Henry's End. Photo by gastrodamus via Flickr
BHB has confirmation that the space at 50 Henry Street will be a joint venture from the owners of Henry’s End (44 Henry Street) and Cranberry’s (48 Henry Street). The space will continue as a wine bar, and will also serve breakfast and lunch according to Mark Lahm at Henry’s End. The new place will be open for breakfast and lunch in late February 2009, but the wine bar won’t be open until the spring. Small plates (cheese, paté, creative salads) will be served at the wine bar for dinner. The overall idea of the new venture will be “casual, good food.”
Oh, and Alan Young, former owner of the “Busted Chef” businesses, will be totally uninvolved.

If it’s the 21st century in America, the end of the year signals the chorus of “is it over yet?” and/or “next year can’t be any worse.” With that in mind (errr sumthin’) let us look back at the wacky year we like to call 2008. Here’s a rundown from Q1 08. Stay tuned to the rest of the year this week: Continue Reading →
New Life at Wine Bar
The bright yellow exterior of the storefront at 50 Henry Street is now a more subdued shade of cranberry. According to workers at site formerly known at the Wine Bar at 50 Henry Street, an “American restaurant” will be opening there soon.
The wine bar and its sister stores Busy Chef, Blue Pig and Oven were shut down earlier this year when manager Dan Kaufman was accused of credit card fraud and identity theft. Kaufman’s latest court appearance was scheduled for last Friday (12/26). No further information is available at this time.
Bikes vs. Cars in Brooklyn Heights
We missed this YouTube post by CUNY’s NYC News Service last month, but since we can’t resist a good bikes vs. cars story… here it is.

BHB Tipster: Grinch Robs Pickle
BHB Newshound “RS” reported to us earlier today: “The Spicy Pickle [on Montague Street] has been robbed. I’m there now and the police are investigating.”
Yassky – Pesky Vendors Must Gosky
Our man in the City Council, David Yassky is calling for the bannation of vendors from Court Street, saying they are illegal and are unfair competition to local businesses:
NY Daily News: Vendors are…: City Councilman David Yassky (D-Brooklyn Heights) has proposed a ban on vending along Court St., and wants cops to confiscate merchandise sold by illegal vendors along the downtown thoroughfare.
“It’s just gotten to be too much,” Yassky said. “On every block there are three tables of vendors blocking the street.”
Yassky said the vendors create a “chaotic atmosphere” that is unattractive to firms considering office space on the street.
“We’re trying to market the Court St. office buildings to law firms and banks,” he said. “The street vendors … definitely create a bad impression.”
