Is Midnight the Missing Dog for Real?

From the BHB Inbox comes a story that we can’t confirm, have no idea if it’s true but figured we’d share with you anyway:

Tonight, walking down Montegue Street [sic] around 6pm, I heard a woman scream outside Key Foods. She was screaming for her missing Yorkshire Terrier, Midnight, whom she has tied up to the post while she went in the store. Continue Reading →

Dentist a No Go for Mr. Souvlaki Space

It’s official – Vitadent has backed out of its plan to move into 147 Montague Street according to the Brooklyn Eagle.  The site of the old Mr. Souvlaki restaurant and office space above it are once again available for rent.  (Wethinks it would make a great combo of a *new* Magnetic Field/Brooklyn Bugle office.  If we only had a ‘benefactor”.)

House of D Slapped with TRO

A Temporary Restraining Order has been issued in the case between NYC Department of Corrections and the coalition of jail opponents suing to stop the reopening of the Brooklyn House of Detention.

NYS Senator-Elect Daniel Squadron (D-SD25) issued this statement: “I commend the Department of Corrections for agreeing to halt the proposed expansion of the House of Detention pending further conversation with the community. I hope it is a sign that a new day of community input has dawned, and that we can make progress together toward replacing the jail with the affordable housing and middle school we so desperately need on this site.”

Welcome Back, Gristedes

Sure we bought our share of moldy veggies and passed-sell by date milk at the “old” Gristedes.  Yes, we may have had dark thoughts about torching the place (metaphorically of course) ourselves.  However, that evil deed was accomplished by an electrical malfunction on April Fools Day 2008.

On Friday morning (11/21) the new “improved” Gristedes on Henry and Clark will re-open with a reported VIP Party from 8am – 11am.

Godspeed Gristedes, welcome back.

Speak Your Mind: Does Hillary Really “Heart” NY?

Three words that go together as much as “economy, fundamentals and strong” … “Hillary, Clinton and Diplomat.”

Once upon a time, there was a radio talk show host in Albany, NY who was appalled at the thought of the then-First Lady being anointed the next US Senator by the Democratic Party. So, given the chance to interview her in that campaign season, the host asked Mrs. Clinton three simple New York questions. If she could answer two out of the three, he would be satisfied. The Danish Seamen’s Church will host its annual holiday season fair on Friday, November 21 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., and on Saturday, November 22 from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. The Fair will be held at two locations: “Danish Food, Crafts, Christmas Ornaments, Music and much more” (last year the “much more” included glog) will be available at the Danish Seamen’s Church itself, at 102 Willow Street (just south of Clark); while a “Restaurant with Danish Open Faced Sandwiches and authentic Danish Pastry” (and which last year served, among other refreshments, Denmark’s great Carlsberg beer) will be at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 Henry Street (between Clark and Pierrepont).

Having attended this event last year, your correspondent can vouch that it’s not to be missed.

Riverside Tenants: Garage Flap is Not Over

Despite the go ahead yesterday from the Landmark Preservation Commission allowing the Pinnacle Group to build an underground garage at the Riverside Apartments,  tenants are shouting “it’s not over until the Fat Lady sings”.

The tenants group has hired the law firm of Collins Dobkin Miller to represent them at New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) to block the landlord from essentially raising rents to build the garage. The NYS DHCR needs to approve the construction before it can proceed.

Pinnacle, according to the tenants, also needs approval from New York State Department of Transportation and the New York State Historic Preservation Office.

The group will hold a meeting tomorrow night TONIGHT to discuss the garage construction. State Senator-elect Daniel Squadron will attend.

Update: Squadron tells BHB, “I was sorry to see the LPC decision about Riverside Apartments. The decision sets a dubious precedent for the Heights Historic District and will cause serious disruption in the lives of residents.”

What’s Next for Workers at Montague Key Food?

Less than a week after Mamadou “Mohammed” Doucoure was demoted from his position as Assistant Manager to “overnight stock boy” at the Key Food on Montague Street,  he claims store owner Enrico Palazio threatened him with a disciplinary measure for punching in a few minutes early.

“I was standing by the time-clock, and a customer who I knew was looking for olives. I had just punched in, but she needed a hand, so I walked with her to Aisle 5 to help. I returned to begin my shift about one minute later,” he said. That was when he says Palazio handed him a grievance complaint for “incorrect punch-in,” with an added threat: “Next time, there will be disciplinary action.”  Doucoure believes the owners are trying to make “an example” of him for his continued efforts to fight against worker repression at Key Food and in retaliation for turning to the union for support. Report: Riverside Garage Given LPC A-OK

Brownstoner photo

Brownstoner photo

The controversial underground parking garage at the Riverside Apartments was given the green light from the Landmark Preservation Commission today according to Brownstoner.   The Pinnacle Group’s original proposal was shot down earlier this year.   The new proposal decreases the number of parking spaces to under 100 and does not include the original’s plan to place one story of parking above ground leaving current landscaping intact.

Scandal! Boobies, Butts on Court Street

While many folks here have voiced that they’re not offended by the “Aesthetic Crimes of Henry Street” some Brooklyn Heights residents are FREAKING OUT over “explicit” images on display at a Court Street newsstand:

NY Times Blogs: At Newsstands…: It was the kind of explicit image that used to be at home in adult bookstores or discreetly displayed at the newsstand so that buyers had to ask for it sotto voce. But there it was, brazenly hanging over the Juicy Fruit at a newsstand on Court Street, on the edge of Brooklyn Heights: an image of a woman showing off her bare backside as she wore just enough fabric to make a necktie….

…“Oh, we’ve had complaints,” said Irene Janner of the Brooklyn Heights Association. “But the problem with newsstands is that they have First Amendment protection about what they want to sell. One down on Court Street is pretty raunchy, but it’s on a commercial street and it’s not ours.

“But nobody in the city would want to take them on unless it’s really hard-core porn.” She added that the situation had existed so long at some Brooklyn newsstands that “people have just given up.”
