Explanation (sort of) for recent vote

The official communication below just came from City Council Member David Yassky.

Dear friends:

I am sure you know by now that the City Council voted last week to approve Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to lengthen the term limit for City officeholders from eight years to 12 years.

I want you to know that after a great deal of thought, I chose to support the Mayor’s proposal. This was the most difficult decision I have faced in the City Council – more than congestion pricing, the garbage plan, or the post-9/11 tax increase – and I want to explain why I believe it was the right choice. Brooklyn Heights Betrayal

Yesterday, 29 members of the New York City Council paid tribute to the glorious days of selfishness and corruption under Tammany Hall. By now, most people are aware of the decision to extend Term Limits for an additional term to all city elected officials. The good residents of Brooklyn Heights should be proud that our city elected official, councilmember David Yassky, played a critical role in the assault on the democratic process and the will of the people. The New York Times wrote a good piece about the Yassky involvement in this historic event.

Chromczak: Term Limit Ruling Disses Voters

NYS SD 25 candidate John Chromczak (R) issued this statement today regarding the New York City Council’s vote in favor of changing the City’s rule on term limits:

“The failure of the City Council to give this important vote to the people shows a clear lack of respect to the voters of the City of New York. The people of New York voted not once, but twice in support of term limits. Apparently the politicians in City Hall don’t care about the voter’s voice being heard, they don’t respect the decisions we’ve made as citizens at the voting booth. They think the only vote that counts is theirs. It’s time for a change. I think all New Yorkers should be upset with the actions by the City Council and remember today’s vote come next November.”

Chromczak will face his Democratic opponent Daniel Squadron in a BHB sponsored debate this Tuesday, October 28, at St. Francis College.

Bossert Sale Falls Through

Brownstoner reports that the Watchtower Tract and Bible Society’s deal with developer Robert Levine to buy the historic Bossert Hotel has fallen through.  Levine’s RAL Companies had agreed to buy 98 Montague Street $92 million in May. It was reported that the group planned to flip the hotel to student housing.  Brownstoner suggests the deal may be off due to slow sales at One Brooklyn Bridge Park,  Levine’s other Brooklyn Heights property, and a desire to minimize the company’s risk in the neighborhood.
