SuperFriends: Diamondstone Backs Kid Squadron

Brooklyn Heights super-commenter/attorney TK Small and his assistant Leroy Martinez attended Ken Diamondstone’s press conference on Court Street and Atlantic Avenue this afternoon exclusively for BHB.  They snapped a photo and provided us with the official press release detailing Diamondstone’s backing of Daniel Squadron in the Democratic State Senate primary (aka The Bid for the Twenty Fifth) on September 9.  Two years ago, Diamondstone failed in his eerily similar attempt to unseat incumbent Sen. Martin Connor.

From Diamondstone’s official statement:

At the beginning of  this campaign, I sat down with Dan and posed him a tough challenge.  I told him that his determination to take on a lumbering dinosaur like Marty Connor wasn’t enough to win my endorsement.  I challenged him to prove the substance of his words taking up the mantle of the fight I began in 2006 against Connor and to demonstrate to the people of our district that he wouldn’t be yet another elected official who let us down.

Dan has risen to my challenge.  He has shown a gift for uniting diverse people and opinions and honing these invaluable perspectives into a single powerful voice . In this way he emulates a leader who has inspired me to continue my struggle to build a better society: Senator Barack Obama. [Diamondstone Press release PDF (Adobe Acrobat Reader required)]

Connor picked up key endorsements today from Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, former City Councilman Ken Fisher and State Assemblyman Jim Brennan.

Chef of the Flies

“CS” sends in this photo, commenting:

I was just walking past Busy Chef  on Court Street and there were dozens of flies on the inside of the windows.  Seems like they might have closed up in a rush.  Wouldn’t be surprised if they left food behind and there were thousands of flies in there…

The Court Street location, as well as the Henry Street store and its siblings Oven, Blue Pig and the Wine Bar at 50 Henry were all closed abruptly in July after the arrest of manager Dan Kaufman on allegations of credit card fraud and identity theft.

Raccoon Sighting on Hicks Street

From the BHB Inbox comes this breaking news item from “MP”:

I’m having dinner this evening al fresco at Tutt Café, and there’s a huge cat crossing the street. But it’s not a cat, it’s clearly a raccoon walking on the west side of Hicks Street, crossing Middagh and heading downhill towards Poplar.  I got a good look at it.  Stripe across the eyes, stripes on the tail, walking like a raccoon.

I made a 311 call and they told me that raccoon sightings in NYC are common and they don’t take reports unless the animal appears to be rabid.  This raccoon seemed to be calmly walking down the sidewalk.

First time in over 40 years living in Bklyn that I saw a raccoon, though I’ve heard there’s a bunch in Prospect Park.  Thought I’d report it to the blog so hood denizens could be on the lookout at night and so they or their domestic pets won’t get into any trouble.  It’s advised to stay away from a raccoon.  They have sharp teeth and claws and could do a number on a dog, or even a person, though this raccoon seemed peaceful.

Raccoons are no stranger to Brooklyn.  The Brooklyn Paper has reported extensively on these “cute” animals over the years including a 2006 report that tells us where they end up after they’ve been caught.  Hint: Don’t go to Queens, Staten Island or the Bronx if you’re a raccoon.

And now, a collection of YouTube videos featuring Brooklyn Raccoons: Continue Reading →

Letter Supports Marty or The Olds Strike Back

Friday’s guest on the Homer Fink Show, Daniel Squadron, came out last week with his plan for Brooklyn Bridge Park.  We’ll spare you the wonkery, but the main point “The Kid” made about the project was that the provision for luxury housing is a non-starter and that there needs to be a review of BBP’s revenue plan.

Residents of the 25th District received a mailer this week striking back at Squadron’s proposal, saying that the park “has no better friend than Martin Connor”.  The letter, signed by many members of the Brooklyn Heights establishment, stresses Connor’s leadership in, among other things, pushing Albany to acquire the land and finances needed for the park.

The Democratic primary for the 25th State Senate District will be held on September 9.  Squadron told us on Friday’s The Homer Fink Show that if he doesn’t win the Democratic primary, he’s will not run an active campaign in November via the Working Families Party line.

Listen to The Homer Fink Show with Martin Connor (8/15) and with Daniel Squadron (8/22).

Letter after the jump.
