New Blacktop on Willow Street

After a couple of weeks of construction, not to mention the DOT Dude and his megaphone at 7AM telling folks to move their cars or risk being towed, Willow Street has a sweet ‘n’ smooth new blacktop.

Guy Steals a Bunch of Old Gray Ladies

From today’s NY Post Police Blotter:

It’s a case of all the news that’s fit to steal.
A knuckle-headed thief was nabbed when he tried to snatch piles of New York Times from a Brooklyn Heights store, sources said.
An investigator for the broadsheet spotted Gary Stewart, 50, snatching the papers from in front of a store on Atlantic Avenue near Clinton Street on Saturday morning, sources said.
Stewart hopped into a cab and fled, but the private eye followed.
A few blocks away, the investigator was able to stop the suspect, even though Stewart allegedly punched him in the face.
The suspect is charged with attempted assault, menacing and petit larceny, according to a spokesman for the DA.

More Gossip Girl Pix

Filming in Brooklyn writes:

Gossip Girl was filming today at Packer, a private school in Brooklyn Heights, and they really couldn’t have picked a more obstructed site: a courtyard behind multiple fences and lots of shrubbery. As if all of that weren’t enough, when the paparrazzi got too aggressive and annoying, the crew set up additional screens to block everyone’s sight.

Kuntzman Responds to BHB…On Gothamist

My name is Homer Fink and I wear the Scarlet Letter of being a BLOGGER. Or so says Gersh Kuntzman, Editor-in-Chief of the Brooklyn Paper and my special friend, on Gothamist today.  Responding to our story last week about what we knew and when we knew it about the Busted Chef caper and how we shared info with the Brooklyn Paper that it chose not to print,  Kuntzman tells Gothamist:

“We did look into these allegations; there was a widely sent email when Busy Chef first opened and we pursued it. But there were no formal complaints filed in Boston or Vermont and no one was willing to speak to us on the record. I am a fan of Homer’s blog but his standard of what he can publish is a little lower; we can’t just print rumors. And his suggestion that our coverage was based on advertising is absolutely erroneous.”

And for the record, we also shared our findings with the proper authorities.  We do not know if our input contributed to the events that led up to Kaufman’s arrest.

Here’s my response posted to Gothamist today, it has yet to clear moderation: Continue Reading →

Pop Up Park Makes People Happy

rsguskind photo via flickr

In today’s New York Post, Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy President Mariana Koval says that Brooklyn Bridge Park will be “to the 21st Century what Central Park was to the city in the 19th Century.”  Everyone seems really jazzed about the glimpse we’re getting of the BBP of the future this summer via the “Pop Up Park” on Pier 1.

Even Brooklyn Bridge Park Defense Fund prexy Judi Francis is tickled (just a tad, come on do you think the BBP will ever be one big feel good story?) and tells the paper, “We are pleased as punch with the interim uses, but the first construction of the park is being done along the piers where the housing will be built, while the work being held up is at the real recreation piers.”

John Catsimatidis’ Myrtle Avenue Stalemate or Do You Really Think This Guy Can Be Mayor?

Gristedes supermarket king pin John Catsimatidis’ Myrtle Avenue condo/supermarket project is stalled according to a report in today’s NY Daily News.  Apparently, Catsimatidis was so confident at one point in the inevitability of the project’s completion that he demolished the neighborhood’s only supermarket to make way for construction.  We found this passage in the Daily News piece particularly interesting especially given the current state of the Gristedes in question: Continue Reading →

The Busted Chef Chronicles Part 3: We May Be Dumb, But We’re Not Stupid

The Busy Chef E-mail File and What We Told The Brooklyn Paper a Year Ago That They Didn’t Print

A little over a year ago, BHB began receiving information from people claiming to have ties with accused fraudster Dan “Busted Chef” Kaufman. They spun tales of someone who was capable of lying to your face while robbing you blind. They claimed on internet message boards that he had fathered a child in New England and had not paid child support. We even heard from ex-girlfriends who claimed the “Chef” had lied to them as well. After a little Googling we uncovered evidence of Kaufman’s secret history in Vermont and of leaving his partners in a Boston restaurant holding the bag to the tune of $40K in back rent.

Where there’s smoke there’s fire, we thought. Continue Reading →

Nabe to Ikea Shuttle: You Stink!

The Brooklyn Eagle reports on neighborhood frustration over the Red Hook Ikea shuttle bunging up traffic on Joralemon Street:

Brooklyn Eagle: Ikea Shuttles…: Congestion on Joralemon Street has increased in any case since the experimental elimination of left turns from Adams Street onto Tillary Street. Traffic that would normally make a left turn onto Tillary is now pouring onto Joralemon Street — not only cars and city buses, but fleets of tour buses heading toward the Waterfalls exhibit at Fulton Ferry Landing and the free weekend Pier 1 shuttle bus. Idling, exhaust-belching IKEA buses have only added to the traffic mess.
