73 Pineapple on LPC Docket

The new owners of the vacant lot at 73 Pineapple Street will face the NYC Landmark Preservation Commission at its next session on August 7.  They will be seeking approval to construct a "new five story building" on the property. As previously reported, owner Deepak Raj promises to build a "contemporary" structure on the land designed by Alex Nussbaumer of AEN Architects.  The Brooklyn Heights Association is on record as "embracing" the new building's intended style. The hearing on the property was laid over in June.

Also on the docket — adding lights to a portion of the Brooklyn Bridge and an application to alter the facade and porch at 52 Livingston Street.

Obama on the Promenade?

Obama on the Promenade?

BHB newshound "KC" writes:

Last night at around 8PM Barak Obama spent about 2 minutes on the promenade complete with heavy security detail. He looked around and left. I didn't have a camera so I got no pics, but perhaps another reader did.

Of course we have no idea if this is legit, but it does give me an excuse to post Obama Girl vs Giuliani Girl:

Tisha b’Av Lesson in Film

Tisha b'Av, the annual Jewish fast day, ends tonight at sunset. During their day of reflection, members of Chabad of Brooklyn Heights watched a screening of the documentary Paperclips.  The 2004 film recounts the story of students at a Tennessee middle school who set out to represent and understand the magnitude of the Holocaust by collecting one paperclip for each soul lost.

Chabad Lubavitch Global Network: “When it comes to sadness, people turn up to support each other,” said Rabbi Ari Raskin of Chabad of Brooklyn Heights. He anticipates that bigger crowds for Tisha b’Av may be a growing trend. “People used to wish each other an easy fast. Now they say, ‘have a meaningful fast.’ A lot of these rituals are become much more accessible, and much more practiced.”

Who’ll Help This Bird?

bird_bhb.jpg

On the mean streets of Brooklyn Heights only one law governs man and beast — Darwin’s. From the BHB Inbox comes this dispatch from “CF”:

This bird has been in front of 90 Pierrepont Street for 3 days now, and has what looks to be a painfully injured leg.  I feel awful seeing him every day, and have tried calling Animal Control, the Department of Environmental Conservation, and 311.  None of the organizations I’ve been in contact with will help pigeons or crows.

I know pigeons aren’t the most welcome neighborhood inhabitants, but I don’t think this bird should have to suffer like this.  If anyone knows who to contact about injured pigeons, or is an animal expert who could help this little guy, I’d greatly appreciate any assistance!

While some folks here at the BHB Metroplex lean more Pepin than Stroud, we think that our little buddy here might get more help and attention if he has a cute name.  Give us your naming suggestions below, as well as any hints on what “CF” can do to help the birdie live to see the season premiere of Anthony “I’ll Eat Anything” Bourdain’s No Reservations next week.

Big Hole on Pineapple

pineapple_BHB.JPG

Luckily it seems as though the DOT is on the case regarding this large crater on Pineapple Street between Willow and Hicks.  Someone was even kind enough to leave a six pack of brewskis for the fix it crew.

Nabe Thesp Meets Brother Fred

Every day I wake up and realize that we're not worthy to live in the same neighborhood as the Great American Actor Paul Giamatti. He can do no wrong. He's might be the most talent thesp of his generation, but he's JUST LIKE US!!  He's got bills to pay too so once in a while he'll make a flick like Fred Claus. Of course  I think it looks friggin' hilarious, but the skeptics disagree.

High Maintainence

Brownstoner reports on two coop sales this week in Brooklyn Heights — one at 33 Willow Street for a 3br 1000 sq foot (reported as 600 in the piece) unit listed at $899k and another 1br 800 sq foot at 150 Joralemon Street that sold for $440k. The interesting thing here is that the smaller unit at 150 Joralemon charged $1301.53 a month in maintenance while the larger Willow Street unit is at $984.47/mo. Willow Street is a small coop while 150 Joralemon is a much larger endeavor. Are maintenance costs out of control in some nabe coops?
