St. George Hotel Brick Thrower Nabbed
The Brooklyn Eagle confirms that a brick thrower was apprehended by police this morning atop the St. George Hotel. We will link to the Eagle's coverage when it is published online later today.
The Eagle is now reporting that a Pace University student identified only as "Jason" was responsible for the brick tossing morning of terror on Henry Street: Continue Reading →

The Brooklyn Eagle reports today that Watchtower Bible and Tract Society has not only put the Standish Arms Hotel on the block, but 5 other residential properties as well:
Brooklyn Eagle: Watchtower to Sell Six Properties: A recent eport that the Watchtower Bibleand Tract Society would be selling its building at 169 Columbia Heights, formerly the Standish Arms Hotel, was confirmed and augmented yesterday with the announcement that theStandish and five other Watchtowerproperties would be sold. The six properties are all residentialand all in Brooklyn Heights, accordingto David Semonian, a spokespersonfor the Watchtower Society, alsoknown as the Jehovah’s Witnesses. “Three are being sold as a portfolio, and the other three are being sold separately,” said Semonian in an email.
Rolling Stone Bocces with Heights Band
Brooklyn based band Pela have been named a Rolling Stone magazine Artist to Watch. As part of their RS profile, they played bocce [video] with writer Amelia McDonell-Parry at FloydNY.
Their music, thankfully, is better than their bocce. As a matter of fact, Capo Homer Fink of Brigate Bocce challenges the band to a match, but only if they promise to play "for fun".
99 Gold Goes Rental
People in contract to buy at 99 Gold Street emailed me that they were informed today the building is going rental. Add this to the influx of new rentals at 133 Water, and Vinegar Hill and DUMBO's rental landscape has drastically changed!
Other new condo buildings in the neighborhood are still in the works. Though there's a 1br under $550kon the market, there's also a 1br on the market for over $1.2m.
(Note: It seems the Open Houses there have been cancelled.)
Clinton Hill America’s “Bloggiest” Neighborhood
A story in today's New York Post cites a survey done by Steven Johnson, of the website outside.in, that shows Clinton Hill, Brooklyn to be the "bloggiest" neighborhood in the nation. The only other New York neighborhood to place in the top ten is Harlem, which comes in eighth. The rankings were determined based on a formula that includes number of blogs, number of comments, Technorati rankings and other variables.
The outside.in article mentions Clinton Hill blogger Jonathan Butler, founder of Brownstoner, and cites as "local obsessions" the effect of Atlantic Yards on Clinton Hill's "quiet charm", and whether the "red-hot Brooklyn real estate market" is "headed for a crash".

Bitter Behind Uncommon Grounds and Oven
We’ve learned via his bitterwaitress.net message board that Chris Fehlinger, the founder of the Bitter Waitress website and former GM of Food Maestro is involved with both Uncommon Grounds (which he says was put together in 10 days) and Oven on Henry Street. The concepts of both places are promising. This 1999 interview gives us some insight into the force behind the brands.
Rep. Towns Holds Court Over 9/11 Debris
Congressman Ed Towns, along with other members of Brooklyn's congressional delegation, held hearings yesterday at Borough Hall on the clean up and the long term effects of 9/11 debris:
New York Times: EPA is Urged to Widen Focus on 9/11: Yvonne J. Graham, the deputy borough president in Brooklyn, said that of the $140 million that the federal Department of Health and Human Services gave to health care organizations after the attacks, only $5.5 million went to Brooklyn, $4 million less than the Bronx, which was not in the path of the main plume.
Kwa-Cheung Chan, a former assistant inspector general at the E.P.A., said that in a 2003 survey conducted by his office, about a quarter of Brooklyn respondents said that their homes had been contaminated with dust or debris from 9/11. A survey by the Sierra Club in neighborhoods southeast of the Brooklyn Bridge, including Red Hook, Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, found similar results, said Suzanne Y. Mattei, the club’s New York City executive.
“This is only preliminary information meant to indicate where further testing needs to be done,” Ms. Mattei said, “but it sure does follow the dust cloud.”
Heights Actor Likes Indie World
The New York Post ran a story this weekend about veteran actor/Brooklyn Heights resident Chris Eigeman:
NY Post: On a Role: 'IF you want me to be clever and quippy, you'll have to pay me," says Chris Eigeman. Which is just the sort of quip one might expect from the type of character that made the actor an indie film darling in the '90s.
This kind of proves his point.
"That's literally how I put bread on my table," says the actor, who honed his trademark persona in a trio of movies by director Whit Stillman: "Metropolitan," "Barcelona" and "The Last Days of Disco." There was also Noah Baumbach's 1995 comedy "Kicking and Screaming," the definitive portrait of male post-collegiate aimlessness.
In all of them, Eigeman played young men who, as one critic pointed out, might have walked out of the pages of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. Highly intelligent and maddeningly smug, his characters were fueled by a blend of arrogance, verbosity and vulnerability.
This is why it's a relief, upon meeting him on his home turf in Brooklyn Heights, that he's not actually that guy. In fact, he's into the idea of playing someone other than that guy.
"If someone wants me to play a drug-addled ex-guitar player from a rock band," he offers cheerfully, "I'll do that for free!"
It’s Bocce…In a Bar!
Brigate Bocce learned a few things today – one of which is that America is losing its sense of humor.
After beating the very affable Cleveland Steamers (wonderful citizens of the world btw) in the first round of playoff at FloydNY, the Brigates learned just what they've gained after a decade of therapy.
IT'S BOCCE IN A BAR, FRIENDS.
Kobra Kai, or at least some of their members have not gotten that memo yet. We feel their pain, but urge some of their team to seek some professional help ASAP. Or at the very least chill out to some old Richard Pryor records.
The Brigates put up a valiant fight — JDP from the Polling Unit, Dr. Mark and Mrs. Fink all kicked some arse, if you will. Continue Reading →
