Nabe Menu Site is Dream Come True

website-jpg-w560h725.jpgNabe resident/restaurant owner Gianluca Martorelli  had a dream to start a magazine and website featuring menus from the Height's local eateries.

His dream came true when Ready to Order launched in October. Martorelli is profiled in this week's Brooklyn Heights Press.

Well at Least It’s Branded

cc.jpg

What are the folks at the nearly totally empty businesses at 60 Henry Street up to while waiting for customers to show up? Creating a website and developing a “brand” of course!

We noticed the URL, cornerofcranberry.com,  posted in the window of the newly opened Blue Pig Party Place across from the triple threat now known as “Corner of Cranberry”.

It’s a brochure page featuring the menus of each establishment (note: we’re fans of Blue Pig) but not much else.  We just thought you should know that we are now in the presence of a MARKETING JUGGERNAUT!

Warning: If you are a stickler for proper spelling DO NOT read the menus carefully.

Update: The spot known to us as the “Blue Pig Party Place” has been reimagined as “Cranberry Place”.  Posters in the window promise that it’s not only a spot for kiddie parties but for “adult parties” as well.  They also say they’ll be “live jazz” and “wine tastings” soon.

BHA Governors Slate, Annual Meeting Announced

spkquinn_150px.jpgThe Brooklyn Heights Association announced in a mailing this week that 9 current members of their Board of Governors have been nominated for the Class of 2010: Alexandra Bowie, Richard Carlson, Saundra Cornwell, Donald Fraser, Michael McCarthy, Brian McGorry, Jane McGroarty, Diane Miller and Patricia Schuster.

According to BHA by-laws, "any twenty five memberships" can petition for others to be nominated. The deadline for filing is February 20, 2007. (If we can find 24 other members, perhaps we'll nominate a BHB reader.)

Elections will be held at the BHA Annual Meeting on February 28, 2007 at Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims.

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (pictured) will deliver the keynote.

Open Thread Wednesday

home_img1_starbucks.jpgA few things bubbling up in the BHB community this week that are up for discussion:

"Nettie Moore" posted under Who is that Guy with the Dog?:

"A friend sent me this link because I complain so much about this man yelling at me. dog is a king charles spaniel, I believe. Its owner has been harassing me for over 2 years; I run every day on the Promenade. The man has become increasingly disheveled and disturbed in the last year. He has begun to yell at the dog, which is worse than yelling at us. Brooklyn Heights, by the way, is not a suburb. Well, it used to be a neighborhood but I suppose now you are welcome to call it what you want. As a third generation native of Brooklyn and a 40 year resident of the Heights, I and my family knew all was lost as far back as when Starbucks opened on Montague Street. All the revolution that’s in the air now is heated discussions about strollers, private nursery schools, and summer timeshares. We have actually begun to feel that the brainwashed Jehovah’s Witnesses are a last bastion of, er, *authenticity* in poor Bklyn Hgts. Yuppies, it’s all yours. All we ask is to please keep it clean."

Ms. Moore, while missing the historical reference of our tagline "dispatches from America's first suburb," brings up some interesting points for discussion.

Is Starbucks bad? At BHB, the Finks loves their Starbucks while Qfwfq will never allow that corporate elixr to pass his lips. But wouldn't we all be better off if one opened in the nabe instead of a "party place"?

Is it such a bad thing that "yuppies" are populating the Heights and arguing over strollers? We'll agree with Ms. Moore on the insanity that is private nursery school and summer timeshares. We'll also maintain that yuppies have long since gone the way of beatniks, hippies and flappers.

Ms. Moore, while we may not know if Dylan still misses you, we do know that you might find Jonathan Lethem's Fortress of Solitude to be a relevant read as well as this piece in this week's New York Observer.

Are the Jehovah's Witnesses that last bastion of "authenticity" in the nabe?

Some other topics up for discussion this week: Filming movies and TV in the nabe – good or bad?

Housing Works – have you been there? Great store or a place to experience massive allergy attacks?

The mac and cheese at Jack the Horse – as close to G-d as you can get on a plate?

Marty Markowitz – your next Mayor?

Dahn Yoga: What You Should Know

centerPhoto2(FqC-5146).jpgA Brooklyn Life has a story about taking a free class at Dahn Yoga on Clinton Street –  "The flier tacked to the tree on Clinton Street was promising: Free class at Dahn Yoga. As one who shamelessly exploits the various community classes offered throughout this great neighborhood, I was in."

After reading the post and comments, we did a little research. Seems that Dahn Yoga is considered a cult by many and has been accused of brainwashing.  Julia Siverls, a NYC college professor died while training to become a "Dahn Master".

Accosted at GROSStedes

A BHB tipster wrote that she was accosted last week by a homeless person INSIDE the Gristedes on Henry Street. “He was cracked out and was asking for money,” our tipster says.  Disgusted, she ran out of the market without notifying the managers.

Has this happened to you?  Is this a new low for Grosstedes?

Law and Order on Remsen Street Today

Also, nabe blogger "Joy" mentions that Ugly Betty shouted out the Heights in a recent episode.

Nabe Blogger: “I’m Not Porn King”

Nabe blogger TwoFones has a doppleganger who runs a highly successful porn adult entertainment business. Both share the same last name but one goes by “Greg” while the other uses “Gregory”. Folks in the digital biz have confused the duo before, but a recent New York Times piece on the more “adult” Gregory flamed up the mix-ups.

twofones photoTwoFones: The Other Me: To set the record straight, that Gregory Clayman is not me.  He’s another guy, about my age I think, who has been in the online content business since founding his B2B streaming adult video company, Video Secrets, in 1996.  The other Greg Clayman gives keynotes, has notable parties, has been in Forbes, and does the panel circuit so it’s not unusual for us to cross paths in the press.  I saw a picture of him winning an AVN Award a few years back and he even kind of looks like me.

Although we’ve never met, I think we have an unspoken agreement that he’s “Gregory” and I’m “Greg” when we do press.  At least, that’s how our names appear for the most part.

Nabe’s Lady Liberty

You may not know who nabe resident Jennifer Stewart is, but you've seen her. She's the one dressed up as the Statue of Liberty at Gracie Mansion parties or as part of NYC's Olympic delegation in our failed bid for the 2012 games in Singapore two years ago.  The New York Times profiles her today.

NYC Mayor's Office photoNew York Times: Easy Lies the Head that Wears the Crown: She lives in Brooklyn Heights in a joined pair of apartments, to which she hopes to add a “de-greening room,” where she could remove her coat of hand-mixed theatrical makeup. (“It gets everywhere.”) The apartment is festooned with statue stuff: a cupboard full of statue-themed mugs, two dozen statuettes and a detailed diorama for the set of a statue-themed children’s TV show she is pitching.

From the roof of her building, one floor up, she has a view of Lady Liberty. “The magnitude of her totally boggles my mind,” she said.
