She died Saturday night, January 14. Pilar and her husband, Joseph, opened Montero’s in 1947, which was once a haven for longshoremen and sailors. Today, it is beloved for karaoke, pool and its rustic knick-knack-packed ambiance. The New York Times said in a 1995 story that Pilar was born in New York’s West Village and first came to Brooklyn as a little girl on the ferry on which her father worked. You can post fond memories on Montero’s Facebook page here.

L Magazine has surveyed Brooklyn’s multitude of blocks, and named its fifty best in various categories. Two blocks completely, and one partially, in the Heights made the cut. The winner in the “Best Block for Historical Significance” class is Montague Terrace (see photo above).

It was here, way back in 1776 at the “Battle” of Brooklyn, that George Washington staged the evacuation of his army to Manhattan, allowing it to survive for another day, insuring that we’d one day drive on the right side of the road.

(Despite the snarky quotation marks, there really was a Battle of Brooklyn; indeed, it was the largest battle of the Revolutionary War. What happened in the Heights was its aftermath.) If there had been a category for literary significance, Montague Terrace could have won there, too, having been home to both W.H. Auden, who wrote New Year Letter at One Montague Terrace, and Thomas Wolfe, whose novel, Of Time and the River took shape two doors away at Number Five. Also, of course, Montague Terrace has featured as the gateway to hell, a distinction L bestows on Central Avenue between Moffat and Knollwood Cemetery, in Bushwick.

The winner in the category “Best Block for Groceries” is Atlantic Avenue between Clinton and Court, which straddles the Heights/Cobble Hill border.

All-world market Sahadi and wonderful bakery Damascus (nearly side by side) would already count for the win, but this block also has a Trader Joe’s, a Key Food, and the Green Pea Grocery.

I’m glad Green Pea gets a mention, but Key Food??!!

Finally, the nod for one of the “Five Best Brooklyn Blocks to Live On” goes to Columbia Heights between Clark and Pierrepont.

Hard to argue with the views from the western side of this heightiest of Brooklyn Heights streets. Seriously, how do these people get anything done?

It could also have been named best block anywhere for helicopter spotters.

I would have made Garden Place best block for Halloween decorations, as well as for trick-or-treating, but L awards both these to Humboldt Street between Nassau and Driggs Avenues, Greenpoint, which, I confess, I’ve never seen.

Neighboring nabes also made out well. Cobble Hill, as already noted, shares the “Best Block for Groceries”. Charming Verandah Place, between Clinton and Henry (which boasts another Thomas Wolfe residence, where he penned the classic exercise in local dialect, Only the Dead Know Brooklyn), gets another of the five best to live on awards.

Whenever we pass by the tiny Ted and Honey and see the happy people outside enjoying a drink or relaxing in the park or meandering down the lane-like Verandah Place, we wonder, “Who are they, and how did they get here?” And then we are jealous.

Smith Street between Bergen and Dean, on the border of Cobble and Boerum Hills, is named “Best Block For Street Festivals”.

This might piss off borough traditionalists of the Italian persuasion, but the annual Bastille Day party (brought to you largely by Bar Tabac, at the corner of Dean) is the most fun had by French people anywhere, ever.

Reflecting its status as a happening place, DUMBO scores four times. “Best Block For Date Night ” is bestowed on Water Street between Main and Old Dock Streets.

Highbrow culture at St. Ann’s Warehouse or Galapagos Art Space; drinks before dinner or after at Water Street Restaurant; and fancy-ass dessert at Jacques Torres (closes at 9pm on weekends). Top off the night with a stroll through Brooklyn Bridge Park for that Woody Allen moment…

Front Street between Jay Street and the Manhattan Bridge is honored as “Best Block For Celebrity Sightings”.

Jason Schwartzman, Cynthia Nixon, Jay Z, Beyonce, Spike Lee, Alexis Bledel (of the Gilmore Girls!), the entire cast of Gossip Girl, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt… These are just a few people we’ve recently seen near our office.

Washington Street between Water and Plymouth Streets is called the “Best Block For Gallery Hopping”.

See large-scale projects by established artists and new works by emerging locals skipping between Smack Mellon’s massive refurbished boiler house space, the Dumbo Arts Center’s expansive loft and Rabbithole Studio’s raw basement gallery.

Finally, Main Street between Water and Front Streets gets dubbed “Best Block For New Media”.

Realtors recently re-dubbed Dumbo “Silicon Beach.” Seriously. A sampling of new social networking locative buzzword emergent media companies operating in this block’s behemoth office building: Digital Gravel, Fusia Communications, Red Herring Design, Lost Boys International, FreeAssociation, Domani Studios, Freeserver, Big Spaceship, The Joey Company, and so on. Also, The L, keeping it real for old media!

Hmmm…not exactly a disinterested choice, but probably valid.

In the schadenfreude department, we note that Park Slope gets only two mentions, “Best Block For Iconic Brownstones” (Garfield Place between Seventh and Eighth Avenues) and “Best Block For Ugly Condos” (Fourth Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets: “It looks like a service road south of Cancun.”)

The most inexplicable entry is this:

45. Best Block for Urban Detrital Discoveries (by day), Lynchian Encounters with the Unheimlich (by evening), and Profound Malaise Bordering on Fear (by night)
Meserole between Bushwick Ave and Morgan Ave
This one wrote itself.

What kind of archaic hipster BS is that?

As Lacrymosa, she’ll perform at The Living Room on September 5, 19, and 26 at 8pm in the first residency of her career.

The reason Caitlin, 22, calls herself Lacrymosa is not for a particular love of Mozart (it’s the name of a sequence from his Requiem), but because of a significant memory. “I sang it in tenth grade chorus, and it was sort of like a time when I came out of my shell,” she told me, her voice as adorable as this heartwarming story.

A recent NYU grad by way of Virginia Beach, the real world has been “a lot scarier” than Caitlin expected. But her resume speaks to a certain fearlessness: since her sophomore year of college, she has been performing at New York City venues like The Sidewalk Café, Pianos, and, more recently, the Bowery Ballroom.

Lacrymosa’s sound is soft and airy, but substantial, what Caitlin described as a mix of her two favorite artists Joanna Newsom and Regina Spektor. “I feel like I’m darker than Regina Spektor, but lighter than Joanna Newsom,” she explained. Her first album “I Was Once (Oh)” came out in 2009; her next, “Selah,” will debut on September 5, the date of her first show at The Living Room. Both albums are on the Family Records label.

Like Spektor, Caitlin is a pianist combining classical and pop music. She’s nervous about the residency at The Living Room because the goal is not merely to entertain the audience for one night, but to convince them to return for two successive shows.

“It’s usually just me,” she said of her typical performance setup. “But for the next three shows I’m going to try to have a sitar player, some strings, some drums, and a sax.”

A Brooklyn Heights resident since July, Caitlin loves Bread and Butter on Henry Street, and has taken a quick liking to the neighborhood, both for its beauty and because the people are just so darn friendly.

“When I moved here I told my mom that I’ve moved to the land of the nice people, and she didn’t believe me,” said Caitlin. “And when she came and visited, she was like, ‘You are right!’”

Maybe some of those nice people will make their way to see one (or all) or Lacrymosa’s shows at The Living Room. And buy an album or two. Let’s not change Caitlin’s mind about us.

Park Slope has a reputation as a neighborhood that’s almost too family friendly, to the extent that some “grown-up” restaurants have been asked to add a kids’ menu, and parents and their children are now welcome into bars. CNN.com even did a story on it back in March:

[A] 14-month-old toddler is the sort of barfly who’s at the center of a recurring and heated debate: Should parents be allowed to bring their babies and children to bars?
It is a question in Brooklyn, New York, that’s fired up online arguments, prompted unofficial protests and made outsiders giggle. And while the issue may not be exclusive to that area, it’s the stuff disputes are made of in what [the toddler's] dad, Matt Gross, calls the kid-heavy “greater stroller zone” of Park Slope and its surrounding neighborhoods.

I’d read the online brouhaha on the topic but never come across it myself, until one Friday evening while with friends at the Brooklyn Heights Wine Bar—a large group of parents came in with babies and toddlers, and the staff even had high chairs to accommodate them all. After a second and then third wave of families arrived, we decided to go get desserts at Tazza and head to my friend’s roof deck. So I ask BHB readers because I’m clueless as to whether this is the norm or not—are many bars now expected to welcome kids? Or does it depend on the bar? Or the neighborhood? And are bars—even wine bars—great hangouts for kids?

The Mark Soskin Trio is one of the many accomplished music groups you will find performing year round at Bargemusic.

At first glance this floating white barge seems an unlikely place for a night of Jazz. But make no mistake, Bargemusic is a great place to hear some very talented musicians here in Brooklyn Heights.

Founded by Olga Bloom in 1976. Bargemusic is committed to enhancing New York’s cultural life with year round chamber music performances. Thursdays are Jazz night down at Bargemusic, now in it’s thirty-second year.

Formerly a transport for coffee beans in 1899, bought by Bloom and turned into a floating concert hall. The interior of the barge was made by salvaged wood from the scrapyards of the Staten Island Ferry. The wooden interior is a perfect choice, the acoustics of this ‘floating concert hall’ are amazing.

Paul Nidenberg, a longtime fan of the Mark Soskin Trio calls Bargemusic an “incredibly underutilized resource”. As we talk in between sets he mentions the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development project saying “as this water front is finally getting used, maybe these guys [Bargemusic] will get some more exsposure.”

The Mark Soskin Trio consisting of the former on piano, Jay Anderson on upright bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums, has been playing together on and off for the last five years. They have released a new album ‘The Man Behind the Curtain’ with Kind of Blue Records which is available on their website www.marksoskin.com.

The band playing at the front of the barge, the Manhattan skyline bobbing up and down behind them. This writer can think of many reasons to check out this and future seasons of Bargemusic, but certainly no excuses to miss it.

Bargemusic schedule available at The Brooklyn Bugle

Construction is moving full-steam ahead at the future Brooklyn Heights Wine Bar at 50 Henry St., and owner Mark Lahm said he’s pushing for an April 1 opening date.

The Department of Buildings still has to make final approvals, Lahm said, but he is in the space each day, creating the wine and tapas menu, and sorting out construction and the security system.

“We’re in there every single day doing work,” Lahm said. “Physically, we’re very, very close to be being ready to go but there’s a big obstacle in front of us. It’s not like we’re taking our time.”

He added, “We’ve been paying rent for a number of months. We don’t like being closed, but we don’t have the choice right now.”

Another snag is that the spot won’t have its liquor license until at least May — Lahm wanted his own independent license instead of taking one over from the former tenant, the Wine Bar at 50 Henry, which was run by the now-disgraced Dan Kaufman and his Busy Chef empire.

Lahm also owns Henry’s End at 44 Henry St., and is partnering with Jim Montemarano, the owner of Cranberry’s at 48 Henry St., on the wine bar project.

Jonathan Spiel, who also owns Tea Lounge cafés in Park Slope and Cobble Hill, has his eye on a 4,000-square-foot hotspot at in the St. George Tower building, and hopes to bring in his concoction of a daytime café-turned-full bar and music venue at night to the neighborhood.

The Brooklyn Heights location is at 111 Hicks Street at the corner of Clark Street (in the old Palmira’s spot), and would be similar in size and event listings to the Park Slope one at 837 Union Street, but the space is divided into three rooms and can host private parties and multiple events simultaneously, Spiel explained.

The setting will also be kid-friendly, with blackboard paint on the walls and afterschool events featuring cartoons and milk and cookies, he added. There would be live music at night and a full bar for adults. And, of course, the spot will offer its famous free WiFi and big comfy couches for the area’s writers and readers.

Spiel said he is still trying to gauge neighborhood interest in a place like the Tea Lounge — so, what do you think? Would you want to see the Tea Lounge move into Brooklyn Heights?

Next Wednesday morning you may wake up with a hangover from an election victory celebration or from drowning your sorrows in Scotch, but by the evening you may be ready to party again, and to learn something in the process. Perhaps something important about the environment, which, depending on the outcome of the election, and your views, may finally be about to receive the attention it deserves, or too much attention, or not enough. If you’re game, you should plan to attend Secret Science Club at the Bell House, 149 7th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, in Gowanus. This edition of SSC will feature Tyler Volk, Associate Professor of Biology and Director of the NYU Environmental Studies Program, whose latest book is CO2 Rising: The World’s Greatest Environmental Challenge. Tyler is also a guitarist and vocalist for The Amygdaloids.

While learning about such abstruse matters as why the CO2 you exhale doesn’t add to the earth’s burden of greenhouse gases, you can <del datetime="2008-11-01T02:43:38+00:00">get gassed on</del> sensibly imbibe Bell House’s featured cocktail of the night, the “Hunk of Burning Love”. Admission is free-ee-ee!

The Head of St. Ann’s School, Dr. Larry Weiss, told channel 9, “Two weeks into the school year to have an experience like this is exactly what we we’re told was not going to happen.” He added that the the school was promised that a menagerie of sex offenders would not be visiting the parole office. However, channel 9 reports that 53 have passed through its doors since the office opened.

What should happen next? What would be your constructive solution for this issue?

Earlier this week, Brownstoner wrote that CB2 seemed to be clamping down on new liquor licenses along Atlantic Avenue via a new policy. It quoted Perris as saying the board would “stop issuing” liquor licenses in “over saturated” areas.

CB2 District Manager Robert Perris clarifies the situation for BHB:

The community board voted unanimously last night [Wedneday] to approve a standing protocol to recommend that the State Liquor Authority (SLA) not approve liquor license applications if the applicants do not cooperate with the community board’s review procedure.

The review consists of a questionnaire and supporting material; floor plans, photographs, a menu if food is served, petitions of support from residents in the immediate area, a copy of the SLA application. (This last item is a bit of a “Catch-22,” since the applicant cannot file the application, and therefore probably doesn’t fill out the application, for at least 30 days after notifying the community board.) The applicant is also asked to post a notice stating when the Health, Environment and Social Services Committee will review the application. Applicants that ask to be laid-over to a future meeting will generally be granted that request. However, applicants that have notified Community Board 2 of their intention to apply for a liquor license, and then are not responsive, will be presumed to be actively continuing to obtain a license. It is that situation that the new standing protocol is intended to address.

Update: According to Brownstoner, CB2 may be pulling a “Jon Crow” — by stopping the issuing of new liquor licenses in certain “over-saturated” areas. One of those areas: Atlantic Avenue near Henry Street. I kid you not:

District Manager Robert Perris told us his board plans to stop issuing new liquor licenses in certain areas where residents feel over-saturated with noisy bars. As a compromise, the board would suggest either a beer and wine license or an early closing time.

Note: Nothing has been decided, and the community board will be discussing the issue at tonight’s meeting. However, having spent a fair amount of time on that stretch of Atlantic Avenue, I have to say the noisiest aspect of that area is the traffic. It’s a major thoroughfare, the bars are all spaced apart, the restaurants aren’t open that late, and the craziest crowds can be found late Saturday or Sunday morning at Floyd when there is a particularly compelling soccer match. Given all the empty storefronts collecting dust instead of rent in that area of Atlantic, does the community board really want to place further restrictions?

Has The War On Fun begun?

As previously reported, BHB pal Dick Swizzle — host of the Sudden Death Game Show at Magnetic Field — will be staging a version of his triviafest at Ricky's (107 Montague Street) opening party Friday night (9/7/07).

Ricky's, which staged a "soft" opening last week was first greeted with minor controversy over its sale of certain "adult" items. However, that prudish caterwauling was drowned out but the giddy shouts of glee from Brooklyn Heights residents under 70.

After Swizzle was seen sporting a new hairdo at Wednesday's SDGS, rumors flew regarding his new look. Not since Mia Farrow chopped off her locks while filming Rosemary's Baby has there been such chatter around someone's coiffure. However sources tell us that Dick's "real hair" will be back and ready for action at the party.

No word on if the banana in a straw hat will make an appearance.
