About Homer Fink

The moniker is the “nom de blog” of Brooklyn Bugle Media founder John Loscalzo, who took it from a novel he read while growing up in Queens, NY. It was called, naturally, The Adventures of Homer Fink by Sidney Offit. “Loscalzo” may be familiar to those who grew up during the “alternative rock” era. He spent most of the 80s and 90s on great radio stations like WNYU, WPDH, WRCN, WDRE and WXRK (K-Rock) in New York as well as KROQ in Los Angeles. Loscalzo has also held executive positions at Billboard Magazine, Sony, CBS-TV and MTV. Loscalzo and the staff of Brooklyn Heights Blog were recognized by the Brooklyn Heights Association with a Community Service Award in 2011.

Eater NY Looks at Brooklyn Heights’ Colonie “One Year In”

Eater NY Looks at Brooklyn Heights’ Colonie “One Year In”

Hard to believe it’s been a year since Colonie opened at 127 Atlantic Avenue. The eatery’s owners Tamer Hamawi, Emelie Kihlstrom, and Elise Rosenberg raised initial funds (and attention) via Kickstarter in late 2010. Kihlstrom lives in Brooklyn Heights today.

Eater NY ran a Q&A with the trio this week and asked them about the game changing review given to them only a few months after opening by Brooklyn Heights native/NYT food critic Sam Sifton: Continue Reading →

Kiddie Hawk – Big Bird Hangs Out at Pierrepont Playground in Brooklyn Heights

BHB reader “Alex” sent us this photo of what appears to be a City Hawk hanging out over Pierrepont Playground this weekend.  Hopefully he’s more mellow than the big fella we spotted chewing up a pigeon last year and more like the laid back chap who came to visit in the snow back in December 2010.

Lost and Found: Have You Seen this Shoe?

Lost and Found: Have You Seen this Shoe?

BHB reader “Jane” writes to us that her baby threw a shoe out of her stroller somewhere around Montague Street and Henry Tuesday afternoon. Considering our record of reuniting the lost and their owners we figured we’d give it a try. If you found the companion to the shoe pictured below email us (webmaster at brooklynheightsblog.com). We’ll give the finder a nice BHB prize package.

Update:As “Jane” comments below the shoe has been found and reunited with it’s other half and “Crazy Baby”! Continue Reading →

Source: Plans for 70 Henry Street Withdrawn from LPC Hearing

According to a BHB source the landlord of 70 Henry Street, Tom Caruana, has withdrawn his  proposal for a new structure at 70 Henry St. to Community Board 2’s Landmarks Committee.  The building currently is the home of the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, which would be displaced if the plan were to move forward.

No word yet on if this is simply a postponement or a permanent shift in plans.

Inventive Christmas Tree Disposal in Brooklyn Heights

Inventive Christmas Tree Disposal in Brooklyn Heights

A BHB reader sent us this comment and photo:

It’s interesting that someone mentioned on the open thread last week that our hood could use a Xmas tree composting station. I was going to suggest that the dead end at Middagh St. would be a good open space to set it up. Well, apparently the neighbors have agreed to xmas tree disposal here as well, but this was not exactly what i was thinking!
