Star Cross’d Romeo and Juliet Come to Brooklyn Heights

Star Cross’d Romeo and Juliet Come to Brooklyn Heights

Arguably William Shakespeare’s most famous play, “Romeo and Juliet” is currently being staged at St. Charles Borromeo Church on Sidney Place. In this version, presented by Theater 2020, the warring Capulets and Montagues are Muslim and Hindu, with the action largely occurring amid the altar and aisles; the director, David Fuller, also used the pulpit to serve as Juliet’s balcony in the famous “Wherefore are thou, Romeo?” scene. (In my mind, the best of the show.) Love quickly drives Juliet from swooning to suicidal, though Poonam Basu handles both extremes with equal aplomb, while Nicholas Pollifrone dominates the altar/stage as his Mercutio grows unhinged. A Tree Grows in etc. etc.

A Tree Grows in etc. etc.

We recently brought you the happy news about Doggie the lost cat. Now, for those of you who’ve been following the Clark St. tree well with no tree, we have some closure for that, too.

We are happy to report that the tree well now actually has a real live tree! According to Mark from the Clark St. restaurant, the City had told him last year that they would not put a tree there because too many trucks drive on the sidewalk. Then they told him they would, but proceeded to put two trees in further down the block instead.

Now, after valiant yet unsuccessful attempts by Mark and his brother, Harry, to add greenery to the cursed space, the City has finally planted a new tree. Congratulations to all, and here are a couple posts for you to reminisce: the (above) photo shoot with Barbie, a sailor and the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and a little ditty about the hole courtesy of Pete Seeger.

Save Engine 205 Rally Featuring FDNY, Local Pols and Steve Buscemi

Blaming a still-sluggish economy, Mayor Bloomberg has now set his cost-cutting sights on the FDNY. Last week he published a list of 20 “endangered” firehouses, eight of which are in Brooklyn, including our own Engine 205; Engine 205 was the first engine company from Brooklyn that reached Ground Zero on 9/11, and sadly lost eight of its men.

Though Engine 205 is in danger of closing, Ladder 118 will remain at the Middagh St. location. If you’re not sure what that means, read the comments section here for an explanation courtesy of our own weegee.

Video of the rally after the jump.
