Simon, Kavanagh Promote Legislation to Identify, Fine Overweight Trucks Using BQE

The Eagle’s Editorial Staff reports that Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon and State Senator Brian Kavanagh

have introduced legislation to establish a pilot program that uses mobile or stationary weigh-in-motion systems to enforce restrictions on overweight trucks on the BQE in Brooklyn.

The Eagle story quotes Simon as observing that overweight trucks are a particular problem with respect to the condition of the cantilevered portion of the highway next to Brooklyn Heights.

If the bill is enacted, it would authorize the city’s Department of Transportation to enter into an agreement with its counterpart at the state level to allow the pilot program to proceed.

Yes, I seriously doubt we’ll be seeing any progress on a larger BQE plan this year, with the pandemic, budget cuts and the need to get the Feds on board. Let’s hope it can hold up in the meantime.

Perhaps I’m missing something. Wouldn’t this result in sending the trucks through the neighborhood?

Cue Lowell George and Little Feat:
“I’ve been from Tucson to Tucumcari
    Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that’s ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn’t get weighed”

Exactly! It is obvious that many folks just unable to get it….

While I like Little Feat my knowledge of there music is not very deep.

I think the hope is trucks will avoid the area altogether and find an alternative, but we all know what usually happens to hope in this city.

By the usual rumble of the trucks on the BQE that I’m hearing from my window right now at 1:00am, it doesn’t sound like the curfew is stopping any traffic. Hard to see how a small fine is going to change any behavior when the threat of arrest doesn’t seem to have any effect…

It’s part of the Interstate system. I’m sure the curfew has not affected train or rail freight service, either.

Fines for violators, then taking licenses away, seizure of illegal trucks, etc.
