I see River Deli has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for its kitchen and wait staff:

Peas & Pickles on Henry St. (a/k/a All In One Mart) has posted a sign that they will be closed from 4/13 through 4/26.

  • Marty Nau

Gonna donate asap! Of all the local joints, this one might hit me the hardest if it can’t stay afloat.

  • Montaguy

Never liked that place – everything is OVERPRICED, lots of produce not fresh & packages expired, and not very clean.

  • AEB

I on the other hand depend on what I’ll always call Peas & Pickles, for convenience, for quality. I hope that this closing isn’t permanent.

Hi all. In an effort to support local restaurants, my family is trying to order an Easter dinner from a restaurant doing take out and delivery. Does the blog (or anywhere else) have a list of restaurants doing delivery/take-out?

  • KBells40

The Montague BID and the folks at @dumbobrooklyn have been sharing lists on their Instagrams — if you’re not on IG, the same info is available on their respective websites.

  • BrooklynHeightzer

Unfortunately to deliver the takeouts to their major patrons would take quite a bit of time since most of them are in the Hamptons these days.

I haven’t noticed them having any cleanliness issues…And whereas I’ve seen no masks or masks being ‘worn’ around the neck by employees at other grocery stores, employees at P&Ps were always wearing gloves plus masks over the nose and mouth. They also still had things in stock that haven’t been available in other places. Hopefully everyone there is well.

  • Teresa

Nooooooo! My main place to shop in the neighborhood.

  • Mary Kim

Of all the terrible news, this was one of the more startling ones for me.

Los Angeles Times article on higher Covid death rates for black Americans mentions Brooklyn Heights:

    https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-04-07/a-crisis-within-a-crisis-black-americans-face-higher-rates-of-coronavirus-deaths

In New York, the discrepancy between rich white and poor black neighborhoods is so stark that [Dr. Uché]
Blackstock has closed a clinic in the relatively white, affluent area of Brooklyn Heights so that she can shift staff to clinics dealing with the surge of infected black and brown patients in Prospect Park South and Crown Heights.

This just hands business to the real price gouger in the nabe: Gristedes! An outrage, for anyone who cooks in. Guess I will have to dig my hiking boots out of my closet to head down to the produce market on Atlantic! Like Hell am I shopping produce in the North Heights while Peas and Pickles is closed. 😡

  • Andrew Porter

Hold the pixels! I just called them, and the woman at the register said they put that sign up, but have taken it down. So they’re NOT closing after all.

  • Knight

I’ve never known them to be overpriced, especially compared to Gristedes.

  • Andrew Porter

They are also open 24 hours, a big plus for me. And I never go into Grosstede’s.

Let’s see if I can post this photo this week. Success! It shows the North Heights in the 1930s or early 40s, before the BQE was built. Taken from the top of the thousand-foot high invisible tower that Robert Moses tore down because it was old, or maybe from the passing Hindenburg zeppelin:

    Thanks all.

I can reiterate this. When I was in the store today I too inquired, having not seen the sign in question, and was also told that they weren’t closing. And shelves were being comprehensively restocked, so….

    GOUGEstedes….

Brooklyn Daily Eagle quotes the BHB post on the Squibb Park Bridge, but credits the post to a woman named “Claudia Scales”

Any news about the effects of the pandemic on the BQE project? I think I read somewhere there’s $2 billion still allocated in the state budget for it. Seems like a good time to reduce the lanes now while traffic is down.

What Claude dresses like in the privacy of his own home is none of our business.

  • aconcernedneighbor

Wondering – Is there a *truck* outside of LICH?
Heard it on good authority that there is. ty

  • Jorale-man

Random thought: I’ve been noticing in my daily walks how much cleaner the neighborhood looks. Without people passing through, heading to the park, etc., there’s much less trash on the sidewalks, along curbs, etc. Even with some homeowners having fled to the Hamptons or upstate, sidewalks seem pretty clean overall. Hope this side effect of the pandemic can last.

  • Andrew Porter

Sent this to Mary Frost there; hopefully it’ll be corrected.

  • Andrew Porter

I spoke to someone who lives at 140 Cadman Plaza W., with a good view of the Brooklyn Bridge. Walkway empty except for one or two people; light traffic. Unthinking individuals who idly discard trash are apparently all sheltering at home in Bavaria or wherever.

Still enjoying so much less sound pollution from helicopters!

  • regularmike

I like Peas & Pickles. You’re not supposed to do all of your grocery shopping there and items are priced for convenience. I don’t buy much produce there but it seems totally average for that kind of store. Staff is very friendly and it’s way cleaner than Gristedes.
