And, next door, 44 Court Street, also in 1940. The columns on the front of the building have since been removed:

“Brooklyn’s Best Diner Breakfasts” in the Eagle includes the Park Plaza Diner, where the Eagle’s Mary Frost chows down. Article here:

The smell of ginkgo berries makes me queasy. Does anyone know what chinese use them for?

  • CassieVonMontague

ginko nuts are edible after being processed. the smell is butyric acid, which is also in milk, parmesan cheese, and vomit. It’s also added to Hershey’s chocolate. That’s why a British person will tell you American chocolate “tastes like sick.”

Wondering how Fairway will fare now that Wegman’s is in town.
We were in the store (Fairway) last weekend and it was a ghost town. Good for us, bad for for business I guess.

I vastly prefer Clark’s, despite the lines on weekends… which incidentally made its way into the Eagle’s reader addendum:

The new Grand Canyon Diner is very good and has a menu of creative omelets.

    “what chinese use them for”

This strikes me as a peculiar way to phrase your question (in 2019).

  • Jorale-man

I wondered that too. It took me about 20 minutes to walk to Wegman’s, and 10-15 coming back on the bus. I liked the experience there too (especially the produce and prepared foods), though I doubt it will supplant Trader Joe’s as my regular go-to store.

My wife is from china and it is not uncommon for chinese to cook the berries and use them for various medicinal uses. The ginkgo tree has a prominent place in chinese culture.

Care to elaborate what exactly you are offended by? Are you the morality police of this blog?

  • http://www.yotamzohar.com StudioBrooklyn

I mentioned neither morality nor being personally offended, so I can’t elaborate on those things.

I will however say it’s a commonly held truth that language use matters, particularly when we’re talking about social matters, and this is something we should all be mindful of. Since I am certainly not the police of anything, I would only volunteer the thought to add to this discussion. It’s not an indictment.

Love the variety at Fairway and if we’re being honest, I don’t love Brooklyn Wegman’s as much as I love a suburban Wegman’s. I do think Fairway needs to step up the customer service but I want them to stick around. Hopefully they will.

I walk to/from Trader Joe’s. The walk back to the north Heights with two full bags and another slung around my shoulders gives me a good solid workout. And I don’t have a car, so lots of places are out of reach.

Fairway’s has indeed been quiet this past year. I expect Whole Foods has been the cause. Personally, I prefer Fairway — easier to navigate, and then there’s the view.

  • aconcernedneighbor

Ultimately, we prefer it too.. over both Whole Foods and Wegman’s. And I’ve noticed they are stepping up their customer service in the past few weeks. Hopefully that sticks.
